        Part 1 of a 3 part post

My best memory is with my dad when I was about 13 years old. I grew up in Alabama so hunting was a big part of my life. My dad always went hunting and he would not go for a day or two it was more like a week or two. There was plenty of public land to hunt on and my dad every year would pack up his old army pop tent and his rifle and head to the woods. My mom and me never knew when he would get back. Sometimes it was a week sometime two or more.

Well back to my memory, I remember I was 10 years old and I wanted to go hunting with my dad. He had taught me how to shoot and I was really not that good but I tried. So that year my dad walked out to the fence line and set up 5 tin cans he then told me that if I could hit all 5 cans without a miss he would take me hunting. I tried and I only got 2 cans, my old man said well better luck next year. Every year after that he would set up those cans and give me the same challenge to shoot all 5 cans without a miss. Well it took me 3 years before I could hit all 5 cans and we were off to the hunt.

I remember the mornig of the hunt my dad packed up the gear and I kissed my mother goodbye. It would be more than two weeks before I would see her again.

If there is an interest Next week I will post Part 2 it is going to be worth the read.

          Bring on Part 2!

I have many memories from recent and long ago hunts with my father. A short funny one was the evening he hiked over to my stand to collect me for the walk out of the woods. I was using a cutting edge tree stand tool, the Baker Climbing Tree stand, as I began my decent using the instructed bear hug around the tree I lost my death grip on the tree at the same time the stand lost it’s bite on the tree. Well, like a scene out of a Keystone Cops movie I slid down hugging that tree and came to a sudden standing stop at the bottom. I just remember my dad saying, “No…I knew I didn’t like that thing”. Wow, that was over 30 years ago!

I’ve still got my Baker. I tore up plenty of hunting clothes using that thing until I figured out I could use the strap to help me climb. It is collecting dust now, a piece of bowhunting history.

Say, how about that Part II????
