I just finished building a set of arrow for a guy getting ready to go on his first elk hunt. He is shooting a 68# longbow at his draw length and he asked for the heaviest Self Nock arrow I could build. So here is what I ended up building for him.

23/64 Laminated Birch Shafts Spined 75/80 cut to 30″
        200gr Grizzly El Grande broadheads
Total weight 940 grains plus or minus 10grains
        FOC is just over 14%

He should be shooting them for the first time today so I’m waiting to see how they fly. I left enough length to be able to cut them down some if needed.

Here is what they look like.

Beutiful design you came up with. Kinda curious how such a heavy shaft is gonna fly as well.

Beautiful arrows. My guess is that they will fly good from that bow

Dont worry if they dont fly well you can just take off the Broadhead and put on a broom head .

Cool Arrow — Looks like something the Southern Plains tribes would have used.
I am not familiar with Laminated Birch – is it Normally that much heavier than other woods?

He shot them today and says they fly absolutely perfect and not to change anything on the rest of the arrows….:D

The laminated birch shafts to run far heavier than PO Cedar or Sitka Spruce in the same diameter shafts. Fir or some of the other hardwoods will be closer in weight to them but will not match their toughness or duribility.

                    Bounty Hunter —
Thanks for the info — I will remember “Laminated Birch”
in the future, when I commission a heavy wood hunting shaft-

Scout you are very welcome. Laminated Birch is much like any wood, the stiffer the spine the more dense the wood. The denser the wood the heavier the shaft. So if you get 5/16 laminated shafts, they will weight as much if not more than 11/32 Cedar or Spruce. When you get ready to build some let me know what spine and shaft weight you are looking for and I might be able to recommend which diameter shaft to go with.

Scout, he wanted them to target elk on an upcoming hunt, but I bet he will use them on other game as well.

If he is a Texian he ought to take your arrows and chase some pigs imho! Avg sows for supper or a big boar for checking penetration. I imagine all ya all are familiar with that however, haha. I Love to hunt feral hogs, try to do it at least a couple times a year [TX]
