I’ve always wanted a longbow, but I’ve never had the spare cash. The bows I use I get older bows at rummage sales but I’ve never found a longbow. Now I’ve $300 in cash and $135 in Cabela points and I am wondering which bow to buy. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum! Cabelas doesn’t have much of a selection of longbows from what I can see, but if you want to maximize those Cabelas points, I would suggest the Bear Montana. It’s a good bow for the price.
If you want to look elsewhere, you might also want to check with the good folks at Rocky Mountain Specialty – https://www.rmsgear.com/store/pc/index_new.asp
They often have an extensive selection of well-cared for, used bows, and you can sometimes find good deals within your price range.
Hope that helps!

Yeah, I’m sometimes leery of buying used bows, but if you buy from a reputable dealer (or individual) like RMSG, they’ll check the bow out thoroughly, and be honest with you about what you’re getting. Good luck, and let us know what you end up with!

I second the Hammer, only more directly: use the C points for something else and buy a good used custom bow elsewhere. Or save until you have a bit over twice the $300 and you can have your choice is many superb new customs. IMO it’s worth the wait.

As said previously, Buy a used bow from a reputable dealer OR look up Omega longbows on the web. They are about $300 new and have stellar reviews. Than use the cabelas points to get some carbon arrow, broadheads, or maybe even selway slide on bow quiver.

Steve — Let’s hear more about Omega bows. In another thread here recently the Samick Sage got the vote for best cheap bow. I’d be interested in other votes for the title, since folks so frequently ask that question.

Do a google search ‘Omega Longbows review’. Every review has been positive….very positive. Custom made by a fella in Pennsylvania, working on low overhead. I have shot one on a recent trip out there, a 60″ er that pulled smooth out to my 28″ draw. Alot smoother, faster, ans lighter in the hand than the Samick Sage. Great grip to, sort of a cross between a locator and pistol grip. Speed was impressive to. If I wasn’t such a cheap, tight wad, I would have bought one, and my wife and kids weren’t with me to offer them as a trade, so I left without it. The kid who builds them is a real outdoorsman/conservationist. He’d be a great BHA member, I mentioned it to him, but as a new small businessman, he’s struggling.
His website is: http://omegalongbows.webs.com/

I’m not sure where you live but lots of time there are local bowyers who make great bows but their names are unknown. You may ck with local clubs which can be hard to find or even try to attend shows such as trout unlimited or the turkey federation – may sound funny but lots of trad shooters are trout and turkey folks

I’ve heard lots of good things about Omega bows as well, though I have yet to see one in person or shoot one. But from all the reports I’ve seen, they seem pretty hard to beat for the price if you want a good-performing, no-frills working bow.

GN Field bow would be a good choice. I looked at the Omega Bow site and that guy has a nice design. I’m OK with the hickory lams but some of the oak risers are too open grained to my liking. I like all his designs though. Wonder why he does not go with a walnut or black locust or an osage option on the risers and lams? Those are all American grown and should be available locally. I like that take down. I could see that one with a black locust riser and limbs with hickory cores and juniper under clear glass.

Has anyone ever shot one of those Bodnik bows that kustomking sells? They have a 58″ d/r ‘little stick’ for 245.

Jim –
I haven’t shot one, but I’ve heard that they are pretty good little bows for the money. Word on the street is that they are coming out with a new model to replace that is even better, but you didn’t hear that from me. 😉

I have the Kustom King Black Forest longbow, not sure if that one is a Bodnik product but it shoots very well for the money. I had to work on the grip though, it was too sharp on my palm. Has an odd palm swell at the rear of the grip which I took off, now it feels right. I’m sure that voided the warranty but for under 300.00 who cares? I palm the grip like a lot of Hill shooter do, hand shock is very minimal on the 45# @ 28″ bow. I would recommend it, some may like the grip as is.

I started off with a Fred Bear Montana Longbow and really enjoyed it. The price was right and it was very durable.

I’ve heard excellent things about Omega Longbows. A guy by the name of Kegan makes them. He is a common commentor over at Archery Talk’s Traditional Archery section.
He seems like a great guy and users have sung praises over the quality of his bows. According to what I’ve heard his exceptional customer service is second to none. I’m thinking about picking up one of his Imperials.

I started using a stemler recurve. Switched to a Herters recurve several years ago. My wife bought me a Hill Country K2 a year ago. I love it. I recently had the oportunity to shoot several black widow bows along side a Hill Country K2 at the Columbus,Ohio archery show. IMO the Black Widow really has nothing on the. hill Country. I say pick one you like and enjoy.
Good luck

If you go for a high end bow go with one that let’s you try it out first. I recently sent a very nice bow back because I didn’t think the fit and finish matched the price.
