Well archery starter is just 5 days away. Going to miss opening day this year due to work, but should be chasing Deer by the 29th.
Just wondering how you folks planned on spending your season this year? Any hunts in exotic locales, or perhaps a long awaited draw application was successful?
Me? Chasing whatever comes within range. This year I have tags for 2 Bear, 1 Mulie Doe, 2 Whitetail Doe, 1 Whitetail Buck, and 1 Bull Moose. Hopefully at least one of these critters will catch an arrow by November 30th.
How about you?

I have a number of 3-4 day trips planned around the state, in addition to the more frequent hunts here around the house. I’ll also hunt Fl some for deer and doves, but will mostly be in GA. Our bow season opens Sep 8 so I’ll be heading to the mountains to ramble and find a hungry bear.
Next year I have plans for September in the Rockies.
Have fun!

Wow. That sounds like a fantasy world to me. Back here in south-eastern PA, there are few options, especially if you don’t have permission to hunt private land. I have permission to hunt on a farm in my area, and a buddy who has some deer near his house up north. I have an antlerless permit for may area and my buddy’s. Otherwise, hope to see a buck. Not sure how many times I’ll get out, but I’ll be there every chance I get. Antlerless archery opens 9/15 in my area. State-wide archery (antlered or antlerless) opens 9/29. Until then, practice, practice, practice. Saving up to try to get out west for Elk next year.

Staying close to home this year, got 3 good whitetail bucks behind the cabin

The landowner protection act in NC changed the rules on using private lands. Permission was always needed but it is much tougher in the landowners favor. LEO’s now don’t need the landowner to call them to pursue you on their land. (Not that I would trespass on purpose mind you) You need yearly written permission on you and you’d best know where the property lines are. Retrieving your bow kill that ran onto anothers property presents a problem.
Since my private options are few there is always the public game lands of which there are tons of in this area. Having traipsed over much of it over the years deer and coon hunting not to mention squirrel hunting and fishing all along the river, I can probably come up with a good spot or two for an old guy to sit on in a few weeks. I know from experience the best bet is to hike in farther than most will go but this year I’m thinking of keying in on areas that seem to be overlooked.

Permission to hunt private property was not that difficult to get around here. Most people here are not against hunting, and they appreciate wildlife being managed on their property, especially for archery. BUT… Then we had an incident in my area some years ago that changed all of that. A hunter let go a stray bullet which wound up hitting a pregnant woman in her her. Fortunatelly she and the baby both survived, but in the lawsuit that followed, it was not only the hunter that was sued, but also the landowner. I have heard conflicting stories as to the outcome (and have not bothered to look), but that scared many landowners in this area. I have seen many more “No Trespassing” signs after that. Now, you either have to know someone REALLY WELL, or hunt private land. It’s a shame, but this is the reason we need to police ourselves. The actions of ONE “bad apple” can have a snowball effect on all of us.

I was not drawn for any special season. I had applied for an elk tag for a season in an area that is very close to home but was unsuccessful. I live on a 100 acre parcel that is nothing but deer habitat so I plan on lots of hunting at home.
I also am planning a 3-4 day deer hunt a little ways away from home in mid october with my wall tent. That trip is as much about the camping as it is hunting:wink:
Deer numbers are down lots in sothwestern Manitlba.
“Good luck to everyone “

Getting fired up for bear season here. Sept 1st !! Got some real good prospects on trail cam. Gonna guide my brother and his boy for bear 2 weeks into the season also. Then, I turn my attention to deer. There also seems to be a bit of a rise in the rabbit population around here so I can’t wait to try my recurve on a few rabbit/grouse hunts.
I love this time of year !!!

This year will be my wife’s first bowhunting season, and my daughter’s second. My top priority is helping each of them fill a tag. Aside from that, I’ll be hunting our WI property, a friend’s place, and several other spots in IL and WI.
-
Well, all of those plans sound wonderful. While all y’all are out in the woods, and things are a bit quiet here, I’m going to spend 10 days in Hawaii with some friends. Poor planning on my part ended up overlapping T.J.’s hunt in Quebec, but it couldn’t be helped. 😆
Ocean breezes, palm trees, snorkeling…you guys have fun hunting! 😀

My hunting buddy and I have spent countless weekends in the public woods we hunt near here and I think it’s time to allow the deer to marinate on our most recent brush blinds we’ve built, so I’lll probably stay out of the woods until our season opens in 3 1/2 weeks.
My plans include first picking up my new longbow this afternoon and becoming familiar with it over the next few weeks. I’ve already got arrows tuned for it, but will need to do some tweaking with the sight window to bring it to more of a center shot. Right now it has soft velcro on the shelf and window that need to go.
I’ve got another buddy who’s been hunting around a reservoir up north in the state for the past three years that has invited me out in November. Another good friend is itching to hunt with a muzzle loader on a private rock quarry where he has a cabin near another reservoir in NW Kansas and since the muzzle loader season runs through the first couple of weeks of archery season, I may spend a weekend up there with him as well this year. He and his in-laws took three nice bucks during last years rifle season, but I told him I’d like to hunt private land for does, not bucks, since Kansas issues up to 4 doe tags per hunter, good on private land.
I’m so ready to be in the woods hunting again I can smell it!

Well this guy is still in my plans from last year
So is this one
Opening day is this weekend, but it will all have to wait as I am celebrating my 18th year with my beautiful bride!

Bowman,
The number of antlerless deer has been bumped up to 5 this year in most deer management units!
This from the KDWPT website:
“Resident Antlerless White-tailed Deer permit (any white-tailed deer without a visible antler) $17.50 for general residents…As many as five Antlerless White-tailed Deer permits may be purchased.”
http://kdwpt.state.ks.us/news/Hunting/Applications-and-Fees/Deer
I have family in Wyandotte County (Kansas City, KS area) and the deer are THICK there! As an added bonus, they are so accustomed to humans that they’re almost hard to chase off. My season will start in my mother’s garden. The deer see her tomatoes as a food plot, so I’m looking at it that way too. 🙂

Plans are to spend most of my time near home….no exotic hunts in the offing. I live in some beautiful mountain country here in Southwestern Pennsylvania, and this will be seven years into the antler restrictions in this state. Seeing some very good bucks not far from the front porch, so don’t have too far too go.
Lots of great public land here that is for the most part not utilized much in archery season. I’ve seen some really good bucks there over the years. We also have a 111 acre plot of mountain land on the family farm….that has never been posted to public use. Just put a cabin on it this year so we have a place to have lunch, tell stories and just chill out. Don’t need to go anywhere else.

George it sounds like you’re living the dream my friend 😀

Just some local whitetail action on my property. Work has been insane and I hope I get opening day.
-
I can hunt on my own place, one another property about a half hour away, and all over oodles of public land. So pretty much any day that has light and ends in Y is a potential hunt or two, and I’ll get in some sort of “hunt” on most of them. That may be as casual as a walk with a bow, but usually it will be at least fairly serious with the intent to get some meat. Got a couple of weekend-plus trips planned and there are usually one or two more that pop up. It’ll be a good year, one way or the other.

I plan on helping farmers again this year get rid of hogs here locally ! Its always fun and free pork !
-
“Pullin out” on September 17 and taking the annual 14 hour drive to central Idaho where I’ll spend two glorious weeks with no cell phone or email!
Same drill as the last 10 years. We’ve got some new territory to explore and will be on the sneak for Wapiti, Deer or Bear.
This year I’ll hunt with my new Shrew Classic Hunter that I’ve been practicing with all Summer.
Best of luck to everyone, and may your coolers be full!

Around home most of October then to the Upper Peninsula of Mi. for a week vacation with the bow. Day after Thanksgiving I’ll leave for the hills of western Ma. where I’m from and hunt a week with my. 54 muzzleloader- my one concession to firearms:D In that low deer density area I’m glad to have it.

Wolf,
Wow, that sounds like an awesome plan. One of the best hunting trips I have had was hogs near Okichobee. I was using rifle. Wanted to go back for archery but kept putting it off. How are the farmers in Ft. Meyers about allowing people on to help with hogs, especially with archery? Would love to hear some stories. Let me know.
Good luck to all,
Alex

I’ll answer your question with a question: Where you from? Are you going with friends?
VA is a beautiful state with lots of nice deer. If you haven’t hunted there, and you will be with friends, how could it not be worth it?

jmsmithy,
I don’t think I have ever been through NJ without seeing deer. Whenever I go to Ft. Dix, I almost always sit and stare at heards as they casually stroll around. Sad part is, I have heard from many people that finding a place to hunt there is almost impossible. This past Saturday I saw a “buck of a lifetime” on the side of 287 when I was on my to Staten Island via Outerbridge. Saw a few fawn with spots about a mile further down on the median. The women’s prison around Clinton on 78 is always loaded with grazing deer. But again, it’s like a zoo, look but don’t touch. You really are blessed to have the spots you do, and especially people close to you that you can share them with. How are the Sika deer? I have been meaning to look into it since I saw a magazine article on them.
Be well and good luck,
Alex

I have a simple three-step plan:
1. Find whitetail deer sign.
2. Find a deer.
3. Shoot the deer.
Listed in order of decreasing likelihood, here in the most-forested state in the Union.

Goin’ to Idaho on the 9th for elk, deer, bear. Have been getting in shape so should be a good time.
650 grain arrows. 50# longbow.
Here? Well… State ground, deer sitting – waiting, stalking and still hunting, and sitting around the campfire with good friends.
Hope you all have wonderful seasons… Peace… todd
