Hey Guys,
It’a been a bit since I’ve cruised the forum but I’m hoping my friends here can help me out. My Wife has a deer tag for the Palisade/North Grand Mesa area I’m trying to get her the best chance of filling her license. I’m sitting it out again this year so I guess I’ll be her pack mule and tend to the newborn baby at home while she hunts. I know that the deer aren’t what they used to be on public land here but it sure would be nice to get her that first deer feeling and put a little meat in the freezer. Any word on places?

Hi Chris
I haven’t hunted Co in some years now, so I don’t have any current ( good ) advice. Maybe one of the other members who lives/ hunts there will pass some good word.

You might try getting in touch with the local Game Warden for suggestions and then just plain old boots on the ground scouting. Things change. One of my favorite spots in years past has recently become overgrown to the point of being impossible to hunt for the deer that have moved on. A good or bad acorn crop can really move the deer, too.

Richard,
Thanks for the reply. I’ve been in close contact with the wardens and they haven’t been very helpful with much of anything, despite my daily volunteering for the past six months. We have two places to go on public that require reservations close by and some areas on the Mesa that I can easily handle but my sweet Wife probably can’t since she’s still healing up from the birth. Private land isn’t much of an option since most guys want thousands up thousands bucks I hunt deer they supposedly hate. I’ll get out there and see what we can find and if it doesn’t work out there’s the possibility of next year.

My mom and dad had a place west of Mesa a ways. I used to have access to the nat’l forest from it. After they passed the land was sold for various reasons (sad). I’m talking 25+ years ago. Recently I got on google earth to just see what things are like these days. Good grief!!!! It looked like a totally different world from what I knew. Every access I used to have is blocked by private land now.
One access I had was supposedly only available during rifle season but I actually won a debate that I should have as much right to use it during bow season as rifle hunters did during that season. So I got to use it. Unfortunately, the next year the right of way was closed to everyone (money, politics, both).
So I hope you and your wife can find an area to have a good hunt.
