We had a pretty breezy/stormy afternoon here, so I thought, “heck, what better time to get out and fling some EFOC arrows and see how they do?”

655 gr. arrow

29% FOC

4 x 2-1/4″ fletching

Wind: crossbreeze, estimated at about 12-15 mph

Shot distance: 17 yards

First two shots I was perfectly happy with, and the third shot was my fault – bit of a crappy release. Still, as you can see at the end of the video, arrow tracking on the first two shots was pretty darn good, given the wind.

As an aside, I was shooting some different arrows the other day in similar conditions, but they were 50gr. lighter and with 3 x 4″ fletching. While I don’t have video footage of that day, those arrows were noticeably more affected by the wind than the arrows I was shooting today.

Just more experiental info to add to the EFOC Files…

You got some cajones to shoot AT your camera…looked like a good distance:shock:

all my “testing” has been pretty informal.

At my place, the wind in summer blows parallel to my townhouse building… (in the winter, dead into it naturally)

So I shoot from the protected side of the house to a fence behind… and the last 10 yards are exposed to the wind shear.

EFOC don’t budge different from a still calm day! Amazing…

Hard to explain/prove this stuff to those who just don’t “get it”.

BRUCE THAT WAS INTERESTING AND GOOD SHOOTING! I know you were looking at arrow flight in the wind,but do you think that your accuracy was better do to FOC.. Some times with high FOC on a windy day the arrow flight might not be perfect but the arrows end up where you want them??

I’ve definitely noticed that, Joe. Somtimes, you can see the shaft being affected by the wind in flight, but the heavy head pulls it back in line keeps it tracking true.

Those were ‘cold shots,’ btw – no warm up beforehand. 😉

I count 19 paces… Not bad!

I paused the video so I could count arrows in the target face. I spent quite a bit of time recounting, but I came to a count of two every time… Where’s the third arrow?

great video.

I have seem the same results. Wind might wiggle the rear end a bit but the head goes where it wants to.

Im still using 3x 4inch feathers so i get a little more wind kick but the head pulls it right in every single time. I was hoping to experiment with smaller fletching but the summer has got away from me so i will be hunting with the 4inch feathers this season. But this video just makes me want to try smaller even more.

I’ve not gotten into EFOC but I’m playing a bit. I just got a nice 46# Yellow Jacket longbow today for a good price. Gerald built it in 98 but it’s brand new. Ha.

Anyway I figured FOC on a carbon arrow I’ve been playing with. 515 gr., 29″ and a calculated 22.5% FOC at this point in time.

The arrow shoots great.

Now after this long story, here in Amarillo, the wind ain’t blowing today so I can’t add to the wisdom being handed out here. It is a rare event, no wind, not so rare me not adding wisdom.:D

I’ll be able to let you know soon about wind effects on some shafts by comparison I’m sure.

It may be that we around here are so used to shooting in the wind that our brains just takes care of business and it might mess me up thinking on it.

THANK YOU!!! I’ve been trying to figure out why I have occasional “butt wiggle” after reading this thread, I think it is just the wind trying to pull the arrow out while the head holds it true. 😀

Smithy nice shooting there in the wind do you shoot the same short range in the cold wind of winter. I like to do that at the nearby outdoor range gets me used to all the elements.

Thanks! And yeah, I shoot in the backyard year-round as much as I can, weather allowing. Snow tends to get a little deep by Dec/Jan, but I try to keep a shoveled path to the target that allows me to at least get out to 12-15 yds:

We have a bit of a breeze today, probably a bit windy to some of y’all, but I’ve been playing with some 2213 aluminum shafts I had laying around and shooting out of my 46# longbow. They were showing way stiff with 125 gr. points of course so I put in some 145 gr. and they shot well as long as I did. Me bobble, they bobble. So I put some 175 gr., on and bingo. Flying great, no more of that aluminum twangs as they cross the bow shelf and they make a hefty thunk in the target.

We have our travel trailer parked in the back yard and if I shoot parallel with it I can here any noise an arrow is making coming off the bow. Maybe not all but if I don’t hear it I don’t worry about it. 😀

Of course it’s not massive FOC, not my intention, but it’s letting me shoot those 5 arrows I have out of once upon a time 1/2 dz..

#6? Momma Nature knows where and there’s a mule deer buck out there laughing at my performance. Well maybe, if he still is he’s an old, old one.

R2 What kind of penetration do you get when you hit the travel trailer? And what did SHE say when she saw the arrow sticking out of HER travel trailer?

I experimented. Trimmed the fletches by about 2/16″ (3/4 to a shade over 1/2). Had to wait for a little wind, but think it reduced the butt wiggle by about a half. So, I guess the rule is the less butt the less wiggle. Always knew small butts jiggle less, didn’t know about the wiggle.
