A friend of mine lives in Washington State. He keeps telling me to come out and hunt Elk. He is not a hunter, but a pretty smart guy and a heart of gold. Always looking to make someone happy. He lives in Gig Harbor. He keeps saying the NW peninsula is the best spot in the state to hunt Elk. I have heard from others that the SW area (around Naselle) is the way to go for both population and lack of hunters.

Any ideas? I am just looking for a general area. I hoped to get a DIY trip into CO this year as I could drive there (even though it would take 2 days MINIMUM each way), so the meat would come with me. WA also has OTC archery tags for Elk that cost about the same, plus I have my friend as a “base camp” (along with chauffer, pack mule, personal physician, etc 😆 ). I could sneak enough meat in my checked luggage to make several great meals, and the rest would stay with him (in the odd chance I actually got one) so nothing wasted.

Again, just figured someone would be able to settle my little “dispute” here. All info appreciated. Be well.

        Alex

Went by the name of Moose I think?

Hey Alex, if you can’t make it pass on his address and I’ll oblige him 😉 😆 I’d feel right at home as I think it rains about the same amount in WA as here 🙄

                    R2,

Wow. Is that TX? My only exposure there is Fort Sam and Camp Bulis. Are tags available OTC or is there a lottery? Quite frankly, I just want to get out on a week-long camping trip with the bow. Location is secondary, but the closer the better. Thanks for the info. Great pic. Be well.

I thought the elk density would be higher than that Ralph and all that snow would make it too easy to track them 😛 😆

I’ve hunted Washington back in 2009. It was an OTC late season either sex tag. It was a very tough hunt. Hunting Roosevelts in the thick timber was as hard of a hunt I have been on. That said, it was so much fun. I have spent time steelhead fishing on the Olympic Peninsula as well and I always saw elk in the river bottoms. My father and I are planning a return hunt next year. I have unfinished business with the burly Roosevelt Elk!

I live in Washington. I’ve only been hunting for 4 year and never have hunted elk on the westside of the state.

Theres plenty of elk on the peninsula. A lot of the land over there is timber company land but there are some small patches of National Forest land. I would look around Lake Quinault. I go fishing around Forks and always see elk but i don’t know about accessibilty to land around there. I would say your right on the money about the SW, Willapa Hills area. Another place i would look at is near Randle,WA. A co-worker hunts down there and gets an elk every year. Hope that helps.
