A big shout of thanks to all the veterans of our great country. Thank you all for your service!
A massive sweet gum tree was planted on a hill in Cades Cove by Golman Myers on Dec. 7, 1941 in recognition of the attack on Pearl Harbor. In 80 years, it’s grown over 60-feet tall. While the Myers farm and home on the site are long gone, replaced with various trees of different ages, Myers’ patriotic gesture lives on.
I heard about this tree a few years ago but never knew how to find it. A couple of months ago I saw a youtube video where a guy pointed out the spot in Cades Cove in the Smoky Mtn Natl Park.
There is a small pull over just big enough for one car that is marked with a large rock. There is no sign telling everybody where it is.
A short hike up the hill and you’re there.
I hope to return someday, maybe next year, to place a flag in honor of my dad, uncle, and aunt who all served in the Pacific Theater.
