With Idaho’s elk archery season only 3-1/2 weeks away, I motivated to get off my butt and do some scouting behind the house this morning. Plenty of fresh elk tracks despite the warm, dry weather we’ve been having. Hiked all the way back to a year-round spring that I often sit at. Lots of fresh elk sign in the mud around the spring as well.

And then literally just as I finished thinking that I haven’t seen any bear sign in a long time, I looked down and there it was:

Not a huge bear, but clearly recent. Definitely had my “radar” on after that!

Fresh Bear sign always adds a little spice to the outing —

Saw a young BBear [150 lbs approx] on my scout to the gila a week and a half ago. I was working my way back to the truck at dusk after glassing an old burn and caught him flatfooted in the canyon{ 75yds away]. Watched each other for awhile and then he decided to continue on up the side of the canyon, always fun to see. I also ran into a “Bachelor Band” of 7 mature Mule Deer Bucks! most I have seen together in a long time. In an area I had not seen much deer in the past. Saw quite a few Elk – Including a three some of good Bulls. All in one Day!

I was checking some areas North of the { whitewater fire} big burn – It looks like a lot of animals moved in to the area I hunt. I hope they hang around till the season starts –haha

              Hey Wahoo –

Last couple days have definitely been a little hazy/smoky. No fires nearby, but the wind has been moving the smoke this way from fires west of here.

I’m actually hoping to get a chance this year to hunt elk/bear. Working fires all summer tends to hurt my hunting plans for early seasons though.
