Being an avid reader of TB, but not saving the the back issues over the years I would like to look back over one of my favorite columns; “Tips from the old timer”. But I do not see anywhere that they may be archived or available. I’ve tried a couple of web searches and not found any of these articles on the web. Anyone know of a source? They sure would make a fine book if compiled together.

          Hi Jim,

That is a great idea. We don’t have a compilation, but you might contact Dennis Kamstra and see if he has something like that. His email address is SafariDen@aol.com. He’s a great guy, and a good contact if you ever want to hunt in Africa.

Just to keep this going a bit, let’s pose a question. What was the best tip that Dennis shared? I think my favorite was using cola to clean the battery posts on a vehicle. 😯

              Cleans toilets too! 😯

I did a quick search and here is what I found on About.com

“There are a number of ways to get the corrosion off your battery posts. Folklore will tell you that you can pour Coca-Cola over your battery to remove the white stuff. This actually does work, but unless you’re cleaning your battery posts on a deserted island with nothing but a supply of Coke, I’d go with a more modern (and clean) method.”

Dennis probably suggested it as a last resort when you are out in the middle of nowhere. 😕

My favorite would have to be the use of duck tape to protect sharpened broadheads when in storage. Such a simple solution. And to add on to it a bit, I have begun to apply vaseline to my broadheads before duck taping them. It keeps the adhesive from the tape from sticking to the heads and helps keep em sharp (or so I was told).

Main purpose of the vaseline is to keep moisture off the blade and prevent rusting. The tape will draw moisture from the air.

One thing to add about vaseline. Be sure and wipe it off your broadheads before shooting. If I understand it right vaseline is a blood coaugulent (sp). It also collects dirt and debree to help seal off the wound.

I wouldn’t mind cleaning some rust off of my broadheads here in the Texas Panhandle. Actually be a good thing!!! 🙂
