A quick tip for newbies (such as myself): Check your brace height!

When a bow is strung (braced), the distance (height) between the string and the innermost part of the bow is the “brace height”.

After some erratic (and frustrating) arrow flight, I measured the brace height of my bow and found it to be 3/4″ short of what it was when I first started shooting the bow. I twisted the string 5 1/2 turns tighter and the arrows once again fly where they should: where I look. It’s a subtle change, but it makes a huge difference in accuracy!

Yeah buddy! This can make or break an archers confidence in a heartbeat. I started building flemish strings this week and building the perfect string only to have it stretch like crazy is super frustrating. I got one string to settle into my preferred 8″ brace height and while the arrows fly true, I would like more twist in the string, so I continue the quest. When my brace height is out of tune, I can give it up…
