Hey All,
New to the forum and just some quick history on me. Started bow hunting in 1978 at 14 with an old recurve. Switched to a compound in 1980 and managed to take my first deer. Killed many deer through the years with compound but got the bug to try traditional around 2006 and my goal was to become proficient enough to take a deer. After about 3 sometimes frustrating years with an older Damon Howatt recurve I managed to take a couple of deer and then went back to the compound and that’s where I’ve been since then.
Well the bug is biting again but I hope to go about it differently and less frustrating this time around. YouTube (which didn’t exist in 2006) has been interesting and helpful. I lived on Leatherwall back in the day. I only say all this to let you all know where I’m coming from when I start looking for advice!
After deer season I plan to start shooting an old Pearson varsity I have (40#) to work on form. I’m already planning on 3 under and some type of gap aiming. My previous trad endeavor involved split finger and instinctive and I just could never get the accuracy I felt was really adequate even at 20 yards. I also constantly fought target panic and early release (I think I was overbowed also). I’m hoping to head all that off with better form and an aiming method along with a reasonable bow weight.
I’m also thinking of a takedown this time around, maybe an ILF setup with some reflex/deflex long bow limbs. Would want to make that purchase sometime in early summer.
Thanks for listening and looking forward to feedback on anything worth commenting on!

Welcome to the party !!!!
FWIW; I’m partial to older classic recurves that I find now & then on ebay. They may (or may not) be as fast as some of the newer custom bows but they will hold their own f they’re tuned and shot with good form.

I think you are on the right road this time … being overbowed causes a lot of problems, as you found out….
Going to a 40lb bow ( especially a take down , with interchangeable limbs ) is exactly the perfect plan .
Form is everything in trad bow…
Welcome to the forum.. keep us appraised on your journey

Welcome to the forum from SE Ohio! If your state allows 40 lb. bows for hunting your plan is right on. I’m shooting a 45 lb. Indian recurve I bought new in 1966. Not saying I’m very good with it but it works well if I do my part. I also have a 50 lb. Bear Montana which I actually did better with, but lately it has become a bit too much for my shoulder. As Scout said, let us know how you progress!
