I just saw a great archery movie on Netflix: The War of Arrows

Just fantastic! It’s made in Korea and takes place during the Mongols invasions. Great shooting, suspense and action to the last scene! There’s a Mongol army general who shoots a very scary arrow sporting a 1/2 pound broadhead! I really like the fact that the movie really shows the lethality of bow and arrow. Plenty of pass-thrus in this movie, which I have never seen before in Hollywood made films.

        Anyone has seen it?

I’ve had it on our favorites list for a while, but haven’t convinced the kids or wife to watch it. Now I can tell them I heard it was really good.

          Thanks for the ammo!

            Alex,

Thanks for the recommendation. I added it to my list. I might end up watching it by myself, but more popcorn for me! dwcphoto

Sorry Alex. We tried watching it some time ago, after someone else here recommended it. We made it maybe 10 minutes. Just found the acting/directing awful. I wanted to fast-forward through it to get the archery scenes, but Caroline nixed that. I look forward to other votes here … and am not above another try.

On a whim, mainly because it was raining and I couldn’t go practice putting stick to paper myself, I decided to watch the film. I sat down on the couch with my art pad and pencils, thinking I would doodle until the archery scenes came on, that is until I realized how amazing and deep the story was. After thirty minutes of sitting there engrossed by what I was seeing, my brother came along and asked me to help bring in firewood (we live in a house that isn’t insulated very well, yet!) and then he sat down after a particular battle scene ensued.

We never ended up bringing in wood, that is until after the credits rolled. It’s a love story, mixed with plenty of action, sure you have to read the subtitles, but if you can get past that, you’re in for a treat. Assuming you have two hours as the movie was rather lengthy, but then again most foreign movies are longer than American ones.

Oh yes, that 1/2 lb broadhead is wicked looking!

I bought this movie awhile back, as it wasn’t available for rent in my area. I do like the movie; watched it several times. As with any “hollywood action” type movie, they stretch the truth pretty far. Twisting your bowstring to make arrows curve around objects? That creaky leather sound from the string? And one picky little point: The Korean bows were gorgeous works of art, while the Manchurian bows were rather drab. Tough treatment of the bow that conquered China. But, I suppose, that sort of thing is to be expected of a Korean movie about a Chinese invasion.

I’d still watch the movie again.

OK, I’ll try it again. If you have Netflix it’s available as an instant watch.

That was me Dave, sorry you didn’t like it. I’m surprised as my wife enjoyed it and she’s not into archery or eastern cinema. As for me, I love old Shaw Bro’s films so I’d watch anything 😆 In fact, give me cheesy oriental revenge films over most of the Hollywood rubbish any day 🙄

Not to hijack the thread…..anyone see the movie Black Robe? I think there was a scene in there where a grouse got an arrah in the neck or am I dreamin’? Anyway I always thought that was a good one…

                          I think you should have…. fast-forwarded

Huh, sorry Dave, I’m just now reading that you did… fast-fwded 8)

Alex (and other friends) — Oops, I was way off. This is not the film I tried watching and could not. While this one doesn’t, for me, start off real strong, as it goes along it gets increasingly better and is pretty good even aside from the great battle scenes. I’m now almost halfway through (watching on the office computer, which isn’t ideal but OK) and really into it, and the best parts, apparently, are yet to come. Time now to shut down for some nightly reading but I look forward to finishing it tomorrow. Thanks for the tip.

                              Alex,

It’s past my bedtime, but I had to stay up to finish that movie. Really great film. Interesting, tragic, beautiful. Great recommendation. Thanks, dwc

I enjoyed the movie….going to have to try to bend the arrow around trees now 🙂

I had seen it around the same time WexBow posted on it. I have to agree with Dave about acting/story line, etc. I actually watched it twice. First time I saw the first half hour and turned it off. I picked it up about a month later. It turned out to get better after the first part. Maybe there is a cultural aspect that, if understood, would have made it more interesting, but the shooting scenes were pretty cool. It’s fantasy (like Lord of the Rings), but still cool to watch. I believe it’s based on some facts as far as broadhead design, etc. Anyway, difinitely worth another look. Be well.

                                  Alex

                                  😀

Good luck, man! Here’s hoping the string doesn’t tear your fingers off. 😉

This is being dredged up from the past because I just saw this movie the other day. I actually reckon it might be the best bow and arrow movie I’ve ever seen. The old Errol Flynn Robin Hood still holds a special place, but this had some outstanding shots and action.

If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favour 😉

I watched this the other night because I saw it discussed here.

                                          Here are my thoughts

1.) I have never, to my knowledge, seen a Korean Film, so I am now more cultured

2.) Even though the archery was somewhat sensationalized, it wasn’t so over the top that I was put off.

3.) The split and hollowed “stick” that the main character uses to shoot short shafted arrows; is this really possible? Perhaps it’s a stupid question, I can not imagine how this would work nor have I ever heard of such a thing.

Look on youtube and do a search for “backyard bowyer”. He made one and shows how to do it. He shoots it on one of his videos.

So yes, it can be done 😯

wow, I thought overdraws were just a bi-product of compound engineering. This video is pretty cool actually. I can see how this might have some advantages for small game hunting, e.g., you could turn broken arrows into functional short range small game arrows.
