I wanted to break the news first here.

It has taken a huge amount of work by several people but, as of this week, the Ashby Bowhunting Foundation exist, as a 501 (c) 3 non-profit foundation. It’s purpose will be to continue research to find the most lethal arrow setups, considering all possible hits under real hunting conditions, in order to provide the bowhunter with the highest possible success rate and to reduce the wound and non-recovery rate of big game to the lowest level possible.

It will still be several months before the Foundation is up and running but the goal is to work through an established university, and some contacts toward this goal have already been established. As with all the previous testing that I conducted, no funds will be accepted from the archery industry, in order to keep the testing truly independent of influence. Also, as with the prior testing, all testing results will be made available to all interested parties, free of any cost. My role in the foundation will be suggest test ideas.

          That is great news!

I am glad that this study will continue on in the same spirit it was conceived  and your initial work will be added to and developed into a greater understanding of the issue.

Best of luck with it in the future and please keep us informed . Especially with future contact info. Is it still possible to send in reports, on our own experiences to the study?

Scout, I don’t know yet whether new reports from hunters will be accepted into the new data or not. Per my request, they WILL NOT be using my data and building on it but, rather, they will generate new data to see if they get the same results as I. They will also pick up testing from the point where I had to stop and carry it forward. They will be using the same 118 data points from each shot as I used, so data comparison can be direct. Also, just as with the original studies, there will be numerous ‘focal test’ into specific things; such as I did with types of edge finish, broadhead skip angle, etcetera. The collective group is still formulating other test plans but nothing I can pass on at this time.

              Excellent !

Interesting, that the foundation is taking the the next step on the ladder so to speak. Ie starting their ” own” but technically the same program where you stopped. I would imagine this helps in continued validation of the study? Please keep us informed as they get sorted out , so we can follow along. Do they have a web site yet?

              Thanks

No web site yet. There’s lots to get done yet. I expect it will still be several months to have things up and running. I’ll try to keep you posted as things develop.

This is great news. Thanks Ed. I think it would be interesting to see how some of the newer single bevel heads compare to the ones already tested in earlier studies. It appears to me there were some good broadheads developed after your initial studies were made available.

Absolutely, Smiley, and not just broadheads. I’m particularly excited about many of the new, light and stiff, small diameter shafts and some of the inserts/outserts that folks are experimented with. It’s relatively easy to hit 30+ percent FOC with some of these newer components. I’m also looking forward to working with a university with access to an ultra high speed camera.

I am hoping Ed shows up here, with a report on the status of the new foundation ( study). I’m interested in the status also.
