Dear friends, family and supporters of The Good Hunt

It has been far too long since I’ve shared news on the progress of our film. After last summer I needed to take some distance, both to get my head above water again financially and to be able to look at the edit again with fresh eyes. So for most of 5 months, I didn’t touch the film. Six weeks ago I started work with an editor I really respect (these guys are hard to find) and the work has been very productive. The film is clearer, leaner and more focused, almost done. Right now we are working on adapting some of Dave’s writing for voice over and in three weeks recording will start for the sound track. These two steps will complete the edit, after which I can start the final postproduction (sound mixing and image corrections).

Looking forward, I’m hesitant to pin down any dates since everything I’ve predicted so far has been way off, but I’d REALLY like to have this film done by summer. There is still some work ahead and some funds to raise, but now that I can see the film coming together a big weight is off my shoulders. I know I’ll have something I’ll be happy with and I hope you will be as well.

Thanks again for you support and patience,

        All the best from Brussels,

        Christopher

Folks I have never seen such a lack of activity on our site. Lets grieve with Dave– and continue the banter that we all enjoy and what enhances our lives. Who knows– might just brighten Dave’s also at this time.

Here here, this is the place to share our joys and sorrows with those that understand us and share our love of the outdoors as Mother Nature created it. 😉

                    Dave,

I got Christopher’s email the day you posted this I think and was very excited to hear it’s moving closer to completion.

I understand that art won’t be rushed, but in this instance I think art is being a selfish jerk and should rush for my benefit 😀

I’ve been looking forward to this film since it was announced. I’ll be putting that on my Santa list for sure. There is an amazing amount of talent on the roles of this site with Alex and his music, Dave, Smithhammer, the writers, Clay the film maker. Those are just the few I know about and that does not even include the makers of bows and arrows. It’s a fine crowd to be tapped into. All the best, david

David, you are so right about the wonderful pool of talent here.

I really can’t wait for this, and I can’t even say how many times I’ve watched the trailer and forwarded it to others. It promises to be so much more than just a hunting film. I’m glad to hear it’s still moving forward, as I know there can be many hurdles to completing an independent project like this.

I’ve had and given away I don’t know how many copies of Green Fire. So I’ll learn my lesson and order up a bunch of the Good Hunt at the same time to save postage…

I’m really looking forward to seeing, and sharing, this film.

Well friends, I hate to be a party pooper, but I’m at odds with the filmmaker, Christopher. With every cut and especially the “almost final,” he seems to be wandering farther from “just a good honest film about the heart of real hunting and how it has shaped a life for some, namely me,” to something I can’t relate to. This “art” thing has gone into a realm that leaves me behind. I made the mistake of viewing the most recent cut on the worst night in the ER at the Denver cancer hospital, watching my wife die … and I reacted to Christopher as you might expect, with terse strong negative emotion. Today I watched it again, at home, on the “big” screen with good sound and striving for professionalism rather than emotion in my response … but didn’t much change my reaction. I have told him that he can do whatever version of “art” film he wishes for the European film festival circuit that he is shooting for, but unless he wants me to disown it totally he will do a significantly different version for the U.S., for me, and mostly for contributors and supporters; you. Christopher is a talented and exceptionally good-hearted young man. But he needs to quit listening to his high-priced “expert” editors and follow his own instincts, which were clearly present in the first cut more than a year ago. I also told him he was acting like a trust-funder who was working on a pet project when there wasn’t anything more exciting going on. Year and a half of messing around and still now film! The longer the “post production” continues, the higher your expectations will be and, thus, the greater the potential disappointment. Since so many of you contributed to this project and so many others supported it here, I have always considered it “our” film, with me speaking for you, much as I’ve always tried to do when writing and as Clay Hayes does in his excellent film. I hope I am still doing that now that I feel forced to “call BS” on this well-intended but gone-astray young filmmaker. There is plenty of good material there and I’m determined to steer him back toward it. Art is a luxury. Truth is a necessity. I’ll keep you posted and am far from having lost confidence. Sometimes success just needs a sharp kick in the butt. DP

Is there scope for those of us who have contributed to pest Chris about this or should we leave it to you do you think?

                                                      Dave,

Not sure if it’s possible, but will there be a “Director’s Cut” or “Deleted Scenes” in the DVD? Might be a compromise that would be a win-win for all. It would be a shame to lose the spirit of what the film is supposed to be about, but I guess there is only so much room and sometimes it “pays” to gear it towards some people who wouldn’t quite get the message. Who knows, maybe I’m just talking out of the terminal end of my digestive tract. Can’t wait for the film. Will definitely be watching it.

                                                      Be well,

                                                      Alex

While I appreciate the offers to help, I think we’re better off keeping the dialogue between me and Christopher for now. He wants to make it work and I have given him an ultimatum. I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t “come around” … as soon as he return from his latest trip to Africa.

So far as a director’s cut and deleted scenes, I don’t think so. Once we get the right scenes into the film, those that have been deleted are generally better left that way. On the DVD however there will be extra material, mostly in the form of two group conversations with fellow thoughtful hunters, including our own Thomas Downing, with his dad and his eldest son. I am a picky old fart, but like Clay, who is giving his film away, I’m not in this for profit and don’t play ever to make a penny from it. (DVD sales will go to recoup the filmmaker’s expenses beyond funds raised). So all I get is personal satisfaction of a job well done. That’s a very strong motivator.

In any event I am not panicked and didn’t mean to stir ire against the filmmaker, who has staked his financial and professional future on this film (big mistake, I say). I just wanted to explain why it’s taking so long–inexcusable–and share my concerns with you. As it stands it’s not “bad,” but merely pointless. Like a novelist who has lots of good material to work with but hasn’t yet quite figured the best way to present it as a story with a beginning, a middle, an end, and an obvious point. We will get there and thanks again for your support and patience.

This morning I had a long Skype conference with the filmmaker in Belgium, Christopher. We have agreed to do two separate versions: one to satisfy his hope of placing in some of the better art-documentary film festivals in Europe and to address a nearly totally urban European population to whom hunting is wholly unknown. In this “kinder and gentler” version he is leaving what I feel is too much to the assumed ability of viewers to fill in the blanks, to the point I really don’t see a story line; all too open-ended. The second version, for U.S. release, I am far more active in and concerned with it “making a statement.” Less artsy, more conversation about what and why and how, etc. This version will be longer, plus out-take extras. It’s possible that contributors who are owed a DVD will get both versions. Anyhow, I’m feeling much better about it now. I absolutely would never have gotten into this had I known the full ramifications of “crowd funding,” which brought in a lot of really good people, a lot of you, who rightly assume the end result will be worth it and not too dissimilar to what and how I write about hunting. So suddenly I feel responsible for “delivering on that promise” and personally at fault it if isn’t up to expectations. If Christopher had been able to fund it all on his own, with no public or group help (both TU and BHA are significant contributors), I wouldn’t have these worries. But neither of us wanted any corporate or other big money investors, so here we are.

So that’s it for now: We are talking, cooperating, and moving ahead as fast as possible on two versions. Thanks for your ongoing patience and get the family outdoors for Memorial Day. Dave

I hate sentences that start with “As a…” and finish with “I feel…” but:
