With Clay now also working on “a different kind of hunting film,” I’m hesitant to mention my own film project here again, for fear some will think we’re in competition. Quite the opposite, in fact! We have been consulting each other all along. In any event, for the many here who have shown interest in “The Good Hunt” project, we finally have a public “teaser” (short) trailer. You can’t do much in 2.5 minutes, but it does at least hint at the fact that while this film is based around a month’s elk hunt, it’s not “a hunting film” per se. It’s more about “a hunting life” and philosophy. Christopher Daley, the European filmmaker, is currently working in Africa which slows things down. His proposed release date is Oct. He will be updating the website this week and adding the teaser link there. Thanks again for your support of this offbeat project and I too am really looking forward to Clay’s film. He’s the real deal and I hope to kill an elk this year with one of his selfbows. Here’s the trailer:

I’ve been following and looking forward to the finished article since I first read about it, I’m also equally interested in Clays project and hope that the two films will complement each other.

Two beautiful films in the making. It’s very refreshing to have someone put into eloquent words what I feel in my heart. All the best to Dave & Clay! peace, david

Looks beautiful Dave. For plebs like me, it is just a lucky time to be alive, with such thoughtful folks investing so much of themselves for the benefit of others.

Thanks, guys. Dave — The film will be sold on DVD, eventually, but I’m not sure about the details — this is Christopher’s film and I’m just the pretty face. 🙄
Here’s what I think will happen: When the film is finished, which will comprise a main feature of about an hour and as much as two hours of extras, Christopher will send DVDs to all contributors who have one coming, but it won’t be commercially available until some time later, after he has run it through the European and US nature documentary festival circuit. I think he’s also interested in getting it on TV at least in Europe. (It’s English and subtitled for other languages.) Then it will be available on DVD, whenever that is, maybe early next year I really don’t know. It’s not a commercial project beyond his need to earn back the tens of thousands he’s invested in it beyond generous contributions from individuals, TU and BHA.
On books, I just posted the new one, “Going Trad,” to my book site and expect copies from the printer any day now to ship out. TBM will also be selling it through the magazine and all the other usual suspects, amazon, local bookshops, etc. This one is a lot like Man Made of Elk insofar as it “goes hunting” rather than philosophizing about hunting … that one will come in a few months. 😯
And now the big writer and film star needs to go shovel dog poop, wash the dishes, and put plastic over the greenhouse frame. 😮

Dave — Fellow “old hippies”? Who you calling OLD!!
While I was never quite sure what a hippie was,I sure knew and appreciated hippie chicks when I saw them. And living in SoCal through the ’70s, during and post Marines, I knew a few! In fact I married the best of ’em. But alas, across our years here her hair has gone straight and mine has finished falling out(from eating too much elk?) and she has become a Mountain Gal who shovels snow off the roof at midnight in blizzards. And no complaints from me! Best of both worlds, then and now.
Labels: always fun to play with, never wise to take seriously.

Looks great. Can’t wait to see it.

Dave P, if you are considering a book to accompany the film may I request illustrations, illustrations appear to have gone out of vogue but I for one enjoy them and they can add so much to a story, bit like Tailfeathers canoe trip. And a hardback, please.
Mark.

There’s a special place in hell reserved for teases. 😉 I just sent a contribution to help speed things along and save your mortal soul from eternal damnation.

Dave,
Have always enjoyed your books, and now looks like I have another one to read, and now two outstanding videos to wait for.
Thanks

Can’t wait for this, and for Clay’s film – two really well done trad films!!
Do I see a traveling double-feature in the works? 😀
-
I’m really looking forward to seeing both of these films. Keep up the good work, gents.
-
WOW! I like it!

Unfortunately I could only catch the audio of the trailer, but it sounded good and I look forward to the film. Also not sure if anyone else felt this way, but I didn’t expect you to sound the way you did (at least I presume it was you as I didn’t see the video). Kinda always expected you to sound like Jerimiah Johnson :).

love it, and looking forward to the full feature. I know it’ll be great

Have been looking forward to this for some time now. Glad to hear we’re getting closer. Thanks Dave Petersen!!

He does, you just have to overlap the ages. In his 20’s he sounded exactly like J.J. 😉

Dave, shoot bows right handed, fly fish left handed?? Interesting.
-
Todd — I’m right-eyed and ambidextrous … or as my wife would have it, “ambi-dumbstrous; he can’t do anything with either hand.” I can’t even imagine drawing a bow left-handed, but no problem fly casting with either hand … equally poor form left or right. In this scene it was a really long cast (for me) into a nice pool below a sheer cliff on the right, and the fish tend to hang right up against the rock … thus, it was easier to get in there with a lefty cast. Just as well nothing in that pool wanted my streamer as I’d have had a hell of a time landing the fish through all those rocks and shallows, and without waders. But the scenery was pretty and the light was right and Christoph wanted to shoot there as a lead-in to a talking-head scene about conservation. Show biz. At least I didn’t fall in.
Otherwise–what exactly did JJ sound like? Indeed, when younger I would probably have sounded more like that guy in the movie, before I lost my Okie accent. I’d much rather sound like Bear Claw Chris Lapp, the real star of the show. That other fella was just a straight man.

Dave,
Understand the filming thing… Nice work regardless of the hoops and the jumping!! 😀
Bearclaw Grizzlap – He DID do an awesome job.
Gotta love the whole movie. I might go watch it right now…
The way that you wander… The day that you tarry… 😆
