So here it is at last — the ultimate solution to a bowhunter’s number-one challenge: scent control. This will put all the bogus “scent-proofing” gadgets and chemicals out of business forever. They should design a hat so that you can wear this miracle unit as you go along.
Excuse me, I’m going to be sick now and don’t want to toss my breakfast on the keyboard …

Yeah, I’d like two of those hats,Dave! One to $#%* in,and one to cover it up…..
Hope you’ve been having fun chasing after the elk,DP! Wanna hear about your adventures…..and the field testing you’re doing with the Ozonic hats.

WOW! I’d hate to see what this thing costs! As for me, I think I’ll stick with G.Fred’s suggestion & tie on some floss. Maybe I won’t tag out on a “monster”, but at least I’ll know that I’ve EARNED the right to place my tag on my first deer. Maybe I should consider getting one for the house for the next time I have beans though………..LOL!
-
Freakin sweet, sign me up!! At only $449 it’s a steal, and it’s got to be a great product with all those big pro names endorsing it. Dave, a hat’s a great idea, but they’re gonna have to make some serious technologic advances to get it down that small. Some day. Until then, maybe a backpack would be better. Iโm ordering one now to go with my http://www.hunteralert.com/Product_Information.html. Man I love hunting.

I am continually amazed at the Hype propagated by the outdoor Media — I guess a lot of Americans are not very bright. It is sad to me that few, want to embrace the “Arts of the Woods”*. It does not have to be there main thrust in life- but they do live on this planet – and as part of there being– they should trully appreciate the actual natural world! or at least have an exposure to it —-

That’s funny. At least this scent killer has some science behind it. I work with ozone as part of my job and the it amazes me what people try to peddle. Ozone does indeed destroy organic molecules, including molecules associated with human odor. But the idea that you can destroy enough scent in an open space with an ozone generator thats marketed as “impossible to exceed federal regulation levels” (ie. very small amounts of ozone) is ridiculous. In addition ozone has a distinct odor on its own that isn’t very pleasant. Maybe that’s the secret, an unpleasant oxidizer that burns your lungs is whitetail attractant.

My read on the testimonial is “I’ve never had so many [Ka-ching] deer get downwind [Ka-ching] of my position [Ka-ching] without getting detected [Ka-ching]” I guess he needs to make a deposit, and so DO I! :D:D
I mean really, how can a small machine send out enough ozone in your entire scent vapor trail and sponge it up? Some logic needs to be applied, here. Remember PT Barnums famous quote??
My belief on all scent control products is that, even those that are mildly successful, make your scent the equivalent of 7 day old roadkill vs 10 day old road kill. We will always stink of human scent to a wild animal once they get a good whiff of us.
-
Guess I better get busy designing the new improved woods generator to run all the equipment needed in the field to take that trophy buck. Perhaps they will be able to hunt and watch themselves on tv from the comfort of the new and improved lazy boy treestand.
How in the world can someone possibly get all this garbage packed into the woods? -
Welcome to tradbow.com, Rattlebone.
While discussing all the garbage the industry and its media (what’s a polite euphemism for prostitutes?) try to foist on us (and whether it works or not is really beside the point, which is: “do you want to hunt, or merely to kill?), while talking about all this garbage, hunting buddy Greg Munther suggested that he should invent an “anti-aura suit.” We all know that deer have a sixth sense for humans in the hunting mode, and are far more relaxed when they “know” we are not in a threat mode. This has been attributed to an invisible, to us, “aura” or “vibe” we put off when in predatory mode. Greg’s anti-aura suit would contain this radiance so that animals can’t tell what we’re up to. Combine that with “scent proof” and you have a thousand-dollar clothing item. ๐ Now if that same suit were designed to recycle our human waste, like an astronaut’s suit, so that we don’t go around fouling the woods with our stinky and bad-aura byproducts, we could charge $2 grand, especially if the suit comes with an ozone hat as a bonus.
-
IT’S ALREADY AVAILABLE DAVE!!! ELECTRO-MAGNETIC PREVENTION CLOTHING!!!
-
This is why I hunt, and once in a while I do kill.
I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. — Henry David Thoreau
-
Ohh man, no wonder our landfills are full of junk.
With all of the clanging that will go on inside these hunting packs, you won’t have to worry about deer smelling you, cause they’ll hear you coming instead. . . . Ya need to read between the lines on these testimonials. ๐
-
the problem is people buy that junk!
-
The fishing industry is full of lures designed to catch more fishermen than fish. The hunting industry is no different. I guess my opinion is that if someone wants to throw away that much money on something so silly, more power to them. I suppose it’s probably no different than people who take their hard-earned money and blow it at a casino, as if Vegas was built on winners.
I view celebrity endorsements much the same way. Anyone who pays even a modicum of attention should figure out rather easily that these folks endorse products because of what the company pays them (or due to the ego boost of being on someone’s “pro staff”), not due to the quality of the item bearing their stamp of approval. While I don’t begrudge those folks making a living, striking while the proverbial iron’s hot (like Michael Jordan who put his name and face on everything back in the late 80s to early 90s), I do feel like I’m being assumed a fool at times. But then again, the capitalist in me says that if someone actually believes the key to killing big bucks is wearing Bone Collector boxer shorts, maybe they deserve to be parted with a few dollars.
In reality, this type of marketing is nothing new to archery or bowhunting. I have a stack of magazines from the 40s-60s stuffed full of advertisements for all sorts of odd things. Those ads contain the same type of celebrity endorsements or sex appeal and hyperbole seen in today’s marketing. The main difference between then and now is the vastness of the modern media. Today we have more magazines, the internet, and a wide selection of cable networks where every goober with a camcorder can promote himself as a hunting celebrity.

Sorry but I had to add to this particular thread. I looked over my sons shoulder as he was looking through the latest Cabelas catalog, And happened to glance at the “NEW FIREFLY CAMO ELECTRONIC WIND DETECTOR”. For only 49.99 you can get 512 readings per second down to 1″ per second, runs on AAA batteries. (not included)
What is the world coming to that we need an electronic device that will do the same thing that the dust under your feet, the feather in your hat, or the string dangling from a top limb can accomplish?
The only up side to this is that my son and I now try to out do each other to find the most ridiculous item sold to hunters. He is now winning after seeing the wind detector first. -
There is an article by Dwight Shuh in the Bowhunter 40th Anniversary issue. Where he discusses the multitude of change in Bowhunting over the past 40 years. But, he also sends a message that despite technology we are all still bowhunters at heart. Or should be. I know many who walked into the woods 40 years ago with a longbow or recurve, that either carry the same today or have moved to the Compound, but at heart they are still bowhunters with the same sense of adventure, wonderlust and appreciation for the outdoors and it’s animals. I would not look down upon the “other” guys their responses are the same as ours, it’s just to them technology makes them a more effective hunter; and some would argue a more ethical hunter — debatable on both sides.

I think the reason some people so willing part with their money for these product is partially marketing and also their lack of knowledge given by a mentor and so they go it alone and struggle with having success so they look for something to make it easier on them.

I saw that previously and txt the info to a trad buddy.
His reply is accurate and regretfully so…
“it’s never going to end!!! They have NO CLUE what “hunting” is!!”
It is, indeed, things like this that have driven me further and further away from ANYTHING that “helps me” take a game animal. (and some of THEM …WORK! lol)
I’d rather never get a shot and get skunked.

Might be a good thing to hang in my livingroom…….next to where my dog sleeps.
He has gas a lot!!
Ya think?
๐
Why dont they “invent” something to make me 100lbs lighter?
Think how QUIET I COULD BE SNEAKING UP ON STUFF!….dang.
Where IS my patent paperwork anyway?
oh wait…….they DONT sneak up on stuff.
THAT WOULD TAKE WORK!! (and ya might have FUN TOO?…O M G) and the deer MIGHT SEE THEM! OH NO!
Temperary blindness bombs coming next?
I have a headache.
LOL

Steve,
For the gas, it’s probably the dog food. Our pup came with a bag of Blue Buffalo, which has what I called “power pellets”. Well, they powered her up, all right! ๐ฏ We switched dog food, and the “power problem” went away. We did have a food transition period though. One good thing became of it. Our youngest daughters new boyfriend came over for the first time when the dog was still “powered up.” Sitting on the couch all night next to that dog was a test of his “mettle”, he never said a word all night, although his eyes watered a time or two. ๐ That new machine would have wrecked that. Why let him off so easy?
-
Sneak, its that what you do when the newest ladderstand/ feeder combo battery quits working and you have to get over there to change the battery out:D I think sometimes we as a society get so wrapped up in the marketing instead of seeking out a mentor to get better and also to learn from. Along with then learning from our own mistakes or those of others.
-
Stupid is as stupid does, and apparently there is a “stupid” market. You all have seen these guys too; they wear their latest gear for all to see…..even at a summer 3D shoot they show up in total camoflauge and calf-high rubber boots. They wear Bone Collector shirts, a C’Meer Deer hat, and they are more than not….terrible shots with their Ritchie Rich bow.
So yeah, the market it there, and typical of a sector of people that can’t think for themselves. They “seen” it all on the goober channels.

Wow “HEC” suits!! Didn’t read it all, but that is interesting. Didn’t find where it worked on dogs. I think the mailman might want one of these suits. Might want to test it on the little ankle biters first, though, before you try it with the dobermans! ๐

Here is an idea, they use charcoal for exhaust fans in restrooms. Has anyone tired to spread the charcoal on there clothes or around them to have it soak in the smell? Figure it would be a least expensive way to keep your scent lock down.
FYI – it is not the same charcoal as you would get after burning something ๐

Ok, ok… I can understand all the sarcasm and negativity here but let me ask ALL of you this ! Have you actually tried it or know someone who has ? Joke all you want but I have seen this unit work “first hand” and yes,it does work !!! I was as skeptical as all of you here at first, but Not any more.

Archer38: I agree with your point, but you have to admit there are many products out there that are meant to do one thing and one thing only, separate the gullible from their cash. I have never tried the ion thing. I have a very odd way of judging things. To me, if it ainโt brokeโฆ Here is what I mean. Ishi was out killing deer his whole life in a loin cloth. I know I am over-simplifying, but you get the point. Deerโs noses did not become any better over the last 100 years. If anything, they have become more accustom to human scent as more people are out there enjoying (and unfortunately destroying) nature.
Remember, many of the people buying these products are the same people who bought the pet rock. You said you have seen it work, and I donโt doubt you one bit. Thing is, I have seen deer come up to people, up to within 10 feet. Not actually come up, but not move. It would take a well conducted study to separate me from that much scratch. Again, I have never used it. I am not saying it doesnโt work. I am just bringing up the point (as I believe many others are) do we really need it?
You make a great point. Thanks for the post.

I don’t think the sarcasm is about if this thing works or not; but more along the lines that a hand-grenade would also be a great deer killer.
-
Yes, points taken, and I do agree that this gadget is cost prohibitive. I don’t actually own one yet myself because I can’t justify the cost. You’re absolutely right, people have been fooling the noses of animals for a long time with just the wind and their wits and will no doubt continue to do so. Maybe I don’t need one….but, after seeing it in action, if I had the money I would definitely use one.
-
Steve Mc — I wish I were as open-minded and accepting as you. No, I take that back ๐
-
Aside from the dubious nature of the product, I see health consequences…
Why would anyone intentionally expose themselves to a concentrated field of lung irritating, cancer causing, chemically oxidizing ozone for hours and days on end?
-
Well I guess I’ll throw the dang thing away :D:D
I gave up on scent killers along time ago. I might sprinkle sage oil or raccoon:D pee around sometimes but that’s about it. Things happen like this morn the wifey decided to bake bacon in the oven. Now everything on the east side of Amarillo smells like bacon baked in the oven including all that I hunt with. Since we rarely have for want of a breeze here in the panhandle hunting into the wind is just a change of direction to hunt for the day. I ooze around or spot and stalk so being on a stand isn’t a problem for me. Mesquite trees pretty much suck for climbing anyway.
No bears around here but maybe some coyote or coon will come looking for bacon bits in the morning. Hope it ain’t some 300# ticked off hog trying to get even though.

That does work but it has to be activated charcoal. Works good when you line the bottom of a trunk or plastic bin and put your clothes in with it. The charcoal does wear out after a while though

Funny, but on my way home from work this product actually came to mind ( saw it this weekend on a hunting show that my son was watching). What I was thinking is when is enough… well, enough. What ever happened to “fair” chase ? At what point do we say “this tilts the tables too far” ? Are we out there for the hunt or the kill? Let’s face it, we choose to bowhunt and shoot traditional equipment for a reason… be it challenge, simplicity, or just to maybe touch the past. Some how we put limits on ourselves and then we look for the latest gadget to make killing easier ? (scratching head) I guess I just don’t get it.
Keeping mind to the wind has always been a part of hunting. Sometimes the wind can cost you an animal. Oh well. Tip your hat to the animals’ great senses and chalk that day up as a win for the other team, so to speak. It’s ok to lament (a little bit) the lost chance, but be glad you had the chance!
Just because something works doesn’t mean it has a place in the hunting woods. Guess I’m just of a different mindset, but then I hang out here too.:D
BTW, Archer38, please don’t think I was singling your comment out. I used it only because you said “it worked” and I can believe that. My in-laws once had an ozone type air purifier and it really did seem to work…. my mother in law fried fish for a meal we had and within about 20 mins. after supper, there was no fish smell, so I believe it could work.

I wonder how it works in the 25mph winds I’ve been fighting all season? ๐
-
I ran into a guy in Idaho last month that had one. He was from Wisconsin, treestand hunting for elk. He gave a grand speech on how it was going to change hunting. I let him babble on….he loved to hear himself talk…and I shrugged and said “I always figured paying attention to the wind was good enough”. He looked at me like I was a poor, lost, illiterate soul. ๐
-
Roger,
That’s funny. I don’t know why, but it suddenly reminded me of the story about a guy who had a heart attack at a baseball game. The Good Samaritan in the next row went over to help when a lady pushed him out of the way and said, โIโm a Nurseโ. She started to dictate who would do what when the Good Samaritan said, โWhen you get to the part about calling the doctor, let them know Iโm right hereโ.
Itโs often the case I guess. Thanks for the post.

Hey Dave, guess you just gotta stay downwind of the contraption like you be doin’ with the critters you reckon? :D:D
I’ve been having wind problems myself. Not high winds especially because 15-25 common here but they’ve been out of the S.E. and that makes the approach to several ares I love to hunt impossible due to adjoining private land. I can see the deer in there but it’s a good thing I love to observe nature too cause that’s all that’s been happening!!! Wind changing after tomorrow me thinks. Yea!!
-
How about that disaster Arrow Holder ( I have no idea actual name, I can’t bear to say it!!!) for compound shooters BUT still makes my skin crawl…It is a swing arm which holds the shooters SECOND/FOLLOW UP shot over the shelf. Upon release of the first shot, the shooter hits a button/switch/lever whatever and arrow #2 drops into position!
How the arrow “nocks itself” is beyond me..
R U Kidding me!!!!:!::twisted::roll:
I have no problem with technology that (depending on your opinion ๐ ) moves the game forward so to speak. I have compound bows, crossbows as well as various firearms in every possible flavor. They ALL have their place and all are a pleasure to shoot, enjoy, hunt with etc…I CHOOSE Trad gear as my primary hunting tool. The thing is, when does it just become a ridiculous $$ grab???!!???
I’ve seen this dumb thing I talked about at the beginning of my post, been approached by the Ozonics guys to be a sales person (respectfully declined), seen the “lazer sighted” broadhead, the HECS suit etc etc..
Is it me or do folks see this stuff for what it is? Is it actually selling – I guess so? Who’s buying it? WHY??? I know I’ve devolved into a rant here and I apologize but it seems that some in the hunting community are doing their best, in a misguided excuse of capitolism, to ruin the rep of hunting for all of us in the eyes of the nonhunting public…The anti’s will always be there but the non-hunters are the ones we need to listen to our message (Think DP and the upcoming film The Good Hunt). Gadgets like the nonsense above (and a myriad of other crap) IMHO do much more harm then good to our image….
-
Rant away Sir.
Are these the signs of an industry disappearing up its own existence:?:
I have to admit to liking gadgets, I have a flash light and a Leatherman:shock: but my greatest confession has to be fixing one of those new fangle telescope things to my rifle, cant see it catching on.
Ironically I used to enjoy shooting open sights but the scope has taken away any sense of achievement so it now gets used a couple of times a year to fill the freezer.
Think Ill stick to ‘stick and string’ keeps life simple.
Mark
Not so much a rant as a ramble.
-
Time might be well spent improving one’s skill with the “stick and string” rather than sitting around dreaming up gadgets and gizmos. But I bet the dude running around with the spear had no problem with the new guy and his “stick and string ” that was sitting by the fire gnawing on a wooly mammoth drumstick. :D:D
They’re are many goodies out there that are great and maybe necessary for we not caveman folk (like a pair of binocs and a scope on my rifle and my eyeglasses) but there’s a whole bunch of useless trinkets being traded to the “ignorant tribes” for “furs”- $$$ so to speak.

New to trad.hunting after 42 years. But thanks to Dave and my new shrew my shooting skills tracking and stalking are improving.
However don’t think we should ignore all the possibilities of our tech. knowledge. Have applied for gov. grant to develop the ultimate back country transporter.
Design perimeters:Look like a horse, solar powered (don’t have to feed it). Carry 1 hunter with gear for 1 week. Capable of deploying cloaking invisibility mirrors and deploying scent blocking ozone out both ends. Sure I will get the grant any takers for investment opportunity?
In the mean time back to the wool clothing, mocs. and walking through the woods. Great forum

Uh, where do I send my check Colonel? Sounds like a dandy.
I don’t think it’s just the trinkets and stuff. It’s the way the marketeers are so successful that makes my head spin. Look at Hornady’s “Zombie” campaign. Is it really OK to shoot at human shapes that bleed? In my mind this is very wrong on so many levels… Has it “Bled”(way bad pun) over to the archery world too?

The collective intellect has not expanded with the population over the past many decades. Just getting a contraption like that off the ground and into the market is baffling to me, since it means more than a few people thought it would make money.
Society seems much more gullible today than forty years ago, and of course they have much more money to play with. Mindsets like this are also perpetuated by the GTN….Goober Television Network, which would sell them to their own parent’s I suspect. Gotta bypass that hard work in hunting and shortcut the experience nowadays…it’s the protocol. Let’s put a MacDaddy insignia on it and watch it take wings. ๐

Just as an aside Alex, in 1964 we were first in the country with our science and math scores for high shool students; today we are 25th out of 33 countries. People didn’t blame society for all their ills, and didn’t expect government to take care of them either. No Alex…there’s more to it than Pet Rocks, which by the way…did not sell to but a few dimwits…mostly in California I suspect It was a complete and utter failure, and most people saw it for what it was. The Orson Wells debacle happened seventy-five years ago…not 40.

Well put Alex:!:
As much as I crave the simplicity of being at my Adirondack Camp (Leaving for rest of week tomorrow afternoon right after I deliver my eggs for Trout Unlimited’s Trout in the Classroom project) chasing critters w my recurve the irony certainly not lost that I’m sitting in bed right now with my wife, communicating with all of you, around the country (& our friends to the North ๐ ) instantly, while typing on the iPad sitting in my lap :D. From what I can tell right now for the 2013 elk season in Oregon, there will be no more taking of cow elk durring the general bow or blackpowder seasons on the west side of the Cascades. (on National Forest lands)
I cant help but think these new regs are a product of how effective the technology has become in archery and blackpowder rifles.
Next step will be either shortening of season length or making the whole state a draw for tags.
Is the advent of technology worth losing time in the woods chasing elk? Not in my opinion.
