Yesterday my friend and I taught 25 kids from all around the southern and eastern part of Michigan traditional bow shooting at the Dahlem Nature Center here in Jackson. The weather held up for us and everyone had a great time. They even asked us when we are coming back again. Once we told them about range rule and safety we started the fun. At the end of it they didn’t want to leave but the place had to close. Actually I was surprised how well some of them shot having never shot a bow in their life. I only had one problem; when many of them pulled back the string the arrows would slide off the shelf and I couldn’t figure out how to teach them how to not let that happen. Any ideas from you folks? I tried to attach a picture but it said it exceeded the maximum allowed size. Any ideas how to make it smaller? I can’t wait until next year to do it again.

Teaching kids is really a blast. I have been working with my six year old and he has really taken to it and done quite well,(he won his first 3d shoot). He had the same problem with the arrow coming off the shelf. We figured out that he was able to avoid it by canting the bow more. That really worked well for him. I have noticed it can also be how he draws back the string, seems if you can get a smooth straight draw and not pull back at angles that helps also. You might try that with the kids you are teaching see how it goes.
Good luck.

Upload the picture to photobucket and resize it there.
The arrow falling of the rest could be squeezing the string and arrow to much or to deep, try 3 under, not so deep when placing fingers on string or cant the bow.

What is photobucket?
I’ll keep messing around with it to see if I can resize it.

Here is an FAQ post I wrote that gives detailed instructions for posting photos. Campfire Forum FAQ’s.
The photo galleries on our site are much easier for posting fun pictures of your time with the kids. Go to the Family and Shoots Gallery and post away. But sometimes, a photo in a post helps explain your point.
And thanks for working with the kids. It sure is a fun and rewarding way to spend a day. Watch for new articles and suggestions for ways to help a new trad shooter in The Trailhead.
