I have a buddy that is also getting into archery and he bought a backstop to put behind his 18″ square target, so I drew up a concept for him to build a frame out of PVC pipe and fittings that will be light weight and can store flat.

I’ll update when this gets built.

Feel free to post up your setups.

What are you using for the backstop fabric?

                Anyone used this product?

Does it weaken (ie: fail to stop arrows) over repeated shots in the same area?

It looks pretty good on their website, if a bit pricey.

I don’t believe it’s intended for use as a target. Just a back stop in case you miss your target. I’ll see it in person tomorrow and will be able to give a better assessment.

I’m keen to see it in action mate. I’ve been experimenting with back stop materials etc. But being a cheap dirt bag I haven’t tried any commercially available solutions.

The archery club to which I belong uses untreated Celotex for their indoor range wall. Last December we replaced it, and since some of the old Celotex was still good, I brought a truck load home to use in my basement range. The stuff will stop any arrow and lasts a very long time.

Dang, Wesbrock! That’s some clean shootin’.

I googled “celotex” and got a superfund cleanup site, a brownfield cleanup site, a mesothelioma lawsuit and an asbestus warning.

What the heck kind of insulation is it?

Incidentally, I tried the backstop cloth that kustom king sells and it didn’t even slow down my arrows. I sent it back.

                            Steve,

I should have been clearer. Technically speaking, Celotex is the name of a company. They’ve been around since the 20s and make a lot of insulation products. I’m sure decades ago a lot of their insulation contained asbestos, which was common back then (so was lead paint). The current product of theirs that a lot of archery ranges around here use is a wood fiberboard insulation. It comes in 4×8 sheets and is about ½” thick. We commonly refer to it as “celotex,” which I suppose is like calling a soda a “coke” or a photocopy a “xerox.” While not correct, it’s common vernacular.

The guy I bought my first recurve from uses two layers of carpeting, hung up. Worked great.

I use 2″ thick extruded polystyrene. 2′ x 8′ at Lowe’s. Arrows go about half way thru (40# bow, 40 to 60 ‘). Pin a paper plate to it, and sometimes I hit the plate. Use a 2′ x 2’ piece with an old door in back in case I miss. Yes, lots of holes in the old door. LOL

Forgot to mention… Makes a nice THUNK when the arrow hits.:D:D
