Archery season has closed here in Wy. Only 11 more months until it opens again. I had a pretty good year, just never let an arrow go. Two of the guys I hunt with both missed cows 2 weeks ago. I had a small bull come in last week at 10 yards but he came in straight down wind, once he received a good whiff of me he didn’t stick around long. Monday night I had a good 5×5 at 15 yards but no shot. However, it was by far one of the most exciting 1/2 hrs of hunting I’ve had in some time, he eventually decided to meander down the draw and onto private propery where I couldn’t follow. Tuesday and Wednesday I was chained to my desk.
The good news is that one of my friends (one who missed a cow earlier) arrowed a spike bull yesterday in the last 2 hrs of the season. Of course he still hasn’t taken the training wheels off of his bow, and I don’t think he ever will. Anyway, long story short, after a excited phone call and an hours drive, I helped him pack out his prize. Luckily (sarcasm is hard to express in print), for us it was only 1.4 miles from the trail head straight up hill. My friend being a flat lander transplanted to Wyoming, didn’t own a frame, and was a bit surprised at just how big this animal at the end of the blood trail was, so hopefully this was a learning experience for him. Luckily for him I had and extra frame to go with my strong back and weak mind.

I was able to get to be around 11:59 last night, the last minute of archery season.

I’m eating my elk tag this year, too. But there are still deer, antelope and turkeys to chase. Played with about 30 turkeys this morning, no shots, but lots of fun. I guess I should be glad I didn’t have to pack out an elk, but somehow I’m not.

it is intresting to me how different our seasons are! Our archery opener was two weeks ago and we have untill like january, that is for whitetail! Our fall turkey is only a week long, at the end of october! Just pretty different!?

It was a big adjustment when I moved to Wyoming. When I lived in ND archery deer opened around the 1st of September and ran into January. Same with Nebraska when I was there. Here archery deer and elk closed on the 30th of September. Last night I put my bow on the rack for the year. Rifle seasons, for the most part, wind up end of October. So come November 2 I’m out of the woods for good. The shorter season definately adds a little unwanted urgency.

Montana’s general archery season starts the first Saturday in September and runs for six weeks. Then the deer and elk get a week off and the boom-sticks come out for five weeks, ending the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Backcountry (wilderness) rifle season opens the 15th of September, along with black bear, moose sheep and goat. These all end the Sunday after Thanksgiving as well. There are some earlier seasons (archery antelope), and some late season stuff (special deer and elk). Just depends how far a person wants to drive to hunt.

                Michael.

Nice post. But, you have shared experiences and memories that are yours forever.

Wow! And I’m complaining because our archery deer season hasn’t even opened yet, It goes from the first saturday on or after the 15th of October and runs to the friday before Thanksgiving. Then 3 weeks of Gun season and then a final week of Blsack Powder and late archery season. Luckily, you can hunt with your bow through all the seasons, and there is access to bow only hunting areas during the firearms seasons as well.

I am spoiled!! Our archery season runs Oct.1-Feb.28 with a 3 deer limit, squirrel and rabbit run Sept.1 till Feb.28 we get March off then 3 or 4 weeks of spring turkey in Arkansas which I follow up with a short trip to Kansas for just a couple more gobblers all while our fishing season goes all year!! WHEW! I of course find something to gripe about with our game and fish all the time. I am an IDIOT! I guess I never stopped to look at all the opportunities I have here compared to other states.

Any of you, feel free to give me a virtual kick in the butt for being so spoiled. I’ll be sure to count my blessings from now on.
