I returned today from my first deer hunting this year. I wet down a few hours south to an early season zone. It was a tough hunt, mainly because we had never been to the area and didn’t know what the deer there did. Of 5 hard days, I saw 1 legal buck, my buddy saw him the next day, but neither of us had a shot.
probably the highlight was this one morning I was sitting in ambush over a mnt. seep and the bird life was phenomenal. I had black-throated-gray, yellow-rumped, orange crowned, and hermit warblers, a vireo, pacific wren, mnt. chickadees, and an Allen’s hummingbird all close enough for me to see the sun shining in their beady-black eyes! They fed around me in the brush for an hour. It was sweet. plus a screech owl that was calling before dawn.
So this morning we went out to do some serious stump eradication. I mean, these things were Overpopulated. We focused mainly on taking out the younger, small ones, but occasionally culled some of the big ones when an opportunity presented itself.

The shooter is my buddy Matt. Can you see the shooting lane in pic #2?
