well I think elk-heart is probably your best source try Racks on http://www.davidpetersenbooks.com

Having said that “getting into their minds” is really what trad bow is all about. Observation over and over–is the key.:D

              John,

I’ve got a copy of Racks and reckon it’s a great book. BHA also did a little 3 part blog on Elk Hunting Tips, here’s the links if you haven’t read them already:

              http://www.backcountryhunters.org/index.php/backcountry-blog/748-diy-elk-hunting-tips-part-1

              http://www.backcountryhunters.org/index.php/backcountry-blog/749-diy-elk-hunting-tips-part-2

              http://www.backcountryhunters.org/index.php/backcountry-blog/750-diy-elk-hunting-tips-part-3

Between Racks and that BHA blog you’ve got about everything I know about elk, which is to say nothing first hand. Hopefully some of the experienced elk hunters that haunt the forum will drop in with some reading tips 😀

And there is the rub between “Instinct and Intellect”. Learning ELK BEHAVIOR can come from books…truly! Good sources referenced!

In the end, you nailed it, that in YOUR AREA, they have adapted to what is going on THERE…not in a book. So you take Col’s tact…read and learn all you can about the animal…then you LIVE with elk to learn about their behaviors where YOU are…or you might end up with an empty sack.

                  Blacktail,

My friend and I run trailing classes through the winter and spring. Until the bears start moving we focus on following and observing elk. Then when the bears are out we focus mainly on finding bears. I sent you a pm with our website. We are located in Humboldt County, not sure how close that is to you in Oregon.

I spent a lot of time chasing hunting watching elk and I am far from being an expert with that being said the one thing I miss or have really never seen are books and or info on late season elk. I have chased elk in the winter and it is definitely different than September with 100 set of eyes watching and people road hunting but is also cool hearing a 100 head of elk all talking at the same time. As said above read those books and get out enjoy yourself and in those heavy road areas get into those dark holes and you may be surprised at what you find there.
