I have a 1970 “B” handle Bear TD with no. 3 limbs @ 52 lbs. I am nervous about continuing to use the string I got with the bow when I bought it second hand many years ago. I would like to continue shooting the bow but I’m afraid of the new string materials and their effects on the limb tips (and the bow in general). What material should I be using for strings and got any suggestions as to a string supplier?

I would contact bear

B-50 is a common string material for an older bows that aren’t FF-compatible. Easily available at just about any trad shop.

Maybe a bit of a thread hijack but here’s the question. Limbs break due to snapping back too quickly, right? So, if you are shooting a heavier arrow a lighter, fast flight, string should not be a problem, correct? Thanks. Dwc

The problem with older bows and using FF strings has to do with the limb tips – newer, FF-compatible bows have reinforced tips to handle the additional stress. Older bows don’t tend to have limb tips that can handle it, though some people use them with FF anyway without reporting problems. Seems like an unecessary risk to me, though.

I’m with you on the unnecessary right part. I just thought all that stress came from the limbs returning too quickly, like a dry fire. dwc

The stress is actually from the lack of “give” in the new materials.

Cool. That makes sense. I appreciate the answers. Thanks, d
