        Hello all,

I shoot a 64″ bob lee signature. 31.5 inch draw = 62lbs with 150 grains up front. Any more up front and I see a kick to the left. The question is why does the outside of my shelf wear out quickly. My shelf has some sort of fur on it and the outside gets beat up. Anyone else seen this.

        Thanks DK

          Hi Doug,

Well, to get the ball rolling… whoever has the answer for you will probably need to know what kind of arrow you are shooting (wood, alum, carbon), spine of arrows, right or left handed, what kind of fletching, is your arrow up against an arrow plate, etc. Otherwise, we’re guessing.

My “guess” is …you said it yourself – arrows are kicking to the left, for whatever reason. I’m assuming you’re right handed.

Sorry, The shafts are carbon traditional only 300 spine, LW 5inch shield feathers, right handed. My strike plate is leather with a toothpick behind it. I dont know why but it shoots where I am looking with the pick behind the leather strike plate. Yes my arrow is against the plate when I am at full draw.

I use a toothpick too. I have always “paper-tuned” my arrows, 10 ft. away through newspaper…starting with a bare shaft. Never satisfied until I got a perfect clean hole, which I do. Again, my “guess” is slightly weak spine. Is your draw length 31.5″ or your arrows? Fast-flite or B-50? Sorry for the questions, but there’s a lot of variables.

My arrows are 32.25 long and my draw length is 31.5. I shoot a fast flight string.I gave up paper tuning because I always get a nock high and left tear. I can never get a clean hole. My broad heads fly with my field points so I just settled on this being ok. My nock is at 3/8. If I bare shaft tune my nock is usually high and left as well. I really appreciate the help.

                Thanks Again DK

I know…tuning can be frustrating. That’s why I quit changing “things”. That perfect round hole is a beautiful thing.

Well, I still think you’re a little underspined. You might try a little lower brace height? Something a little thicker than a toothpick? If you tear high, your nock is a little high. If your arrows are wobbling (even a little) and never recover, you’re losing penetrating energy. Good luck. Maybe someone else has something to offer.

                      Go here:

                      http://www.bowmaker.net/index2.htm

Read it and learn the basics of tuning. Bare shaft tuning will tell the tale.

Honestly I suspect it is either nock point too low, and/or arrow too stiff such that the nock end of the arrow is striking the riser, driving the rear of the arrow left. To get severe shelf wear the arrow is “grinding” into the shelf with significant force. The large fletch you use is working overtime to correct the condition while in flight, so you still hit where you’re looking.

Doug — According to my wife, I have all of those problems. 🙄 And she’s not talking about bows …

You seeing many bunnies down there on the rez? We have a few here on the mountain, first time in some 10 years, but not nearly enough to hunt them. I’m looking around …

HA HA HA I really set myself up for that one. I have no seen a lot of bunnies. Just a few but like yourself not enough to hunt. I have been hunting deer on with a late season private land rifle tag and it has been great. I missed a doe the first weekend (jumped the string) from my tree stand and had a lot of deer in the 30yard range. I need to get just a little closer and I will seal it. It has been great to get some more bow hunting in though. I need to get one just to get the monkey off my back. We should shoot sometime. How much snow is at your house?

We’ve gotten some 20″ but it’s compacted to about a foot … waiting and hoping for more. Good luck on the deer. Beyond I certain point I can’t bowhunt when it’s really cold. Sitting in a tree in a CO winter? That’s dedication! 😀
