hey guys,
im just starting out in the traditional archery world and me and my uncle shoot our long bows together but i rarely get to see him, i was just wondering if maybe any of you experienced bow hunters had any tips on hunting (i plan to hunt white-tailed deer) or equipment for me..
thank you for reading

You might get better responses in “The Trailhead”. (I’m Joking! I saw your post in the “Big Game” sub-forum, and couldn’t help myself 🙂 )
Welcome! Give us a little more of an idea where you’re starting from. Were you previously using a compound? If so, how long?

haha thanks,
i have hunted with a compound for 5 years and i love it. i bought a long bow from 3 rivers archery (#50) in september of 2009 and i have been practicing ever since. I took my first deer with a compound 3 years ago @ 29 pounds (i put the arrow in between her ribs, double lung) but i have a lot of in field experience while watching (hunting with my dad) i hunt mostly in the hard woods.
thank you for your time sir

DON’T get caught up thinking you need all sorts of equipment to be a good hunter. Focus on learning the habits and the habitat of your quarry.oh ok, what kind of clothing would you recommend? I have seen in some magazines, guys in these gilly suites and shooting long bows, All i need is some thing cheap and keeps the rain out but gets the job done.
again thank you for your help

Glad to help. I recall reading somewhere on this forum that some guys use and really like ghillie suits. I’ve never used one, but I am intrigued by the idea. I almost exclusively use wool or fleece because they are quiet. PERSONALLY, I stay away from cotton as much as possibly because when it gets wet it loses it’s ability to maintain warmth, and doesn’t dry as quickly as fleece.
Here’s a thread about rain gear:

I am new to traditional archery hunting, but have been hunting whitetail deer for years with a shotgun. Most of the deer I have taken with a shotgun have been within the same range of a traditional bow (<20 yards). The key is to break your pattern, pay attention to the wind, and most importantly be still. I hunt on an old plastic duck hunting stool and wear camouflage to blend in. I usually sit behind a natural blind: down tree, brier patch, etc. If there is no such thing available I will make one with stuff laying around the hunting area (during the off season).
So to answer your question about cloths, buy, borrow, or trade for something that is comfortable, within your price range, and helps hide you. I will say though, I have had my eye on buying or making an ghillie suit.
A good book on the subject is “Traditional Bowhunting for Whitetails” by Brian Sorrells. I found it most helpful.

Failed to mention that the same goes for me. Wool is a wonderful thing. If you can afford Merino wool then I would suggest doing so. My personal favorite is Ibex Cloting
If you want to go to the trouble, you can always coat your outer garments with DWR to shed water. It works really well on fleece.

😆 That’s awesome! Right you are. There’s alot of Michiganders on this forum. I wonder how many people are wondering what in the world we are talking about.well its good that theres people from michigan on here, hopefully they know how to go from hunting the tall pines of Gladwin and Ubly to hunting the big corn fields of Bad Axe, plus adding wind and scent into the mix. Good lord, then having to draw back a stick and string, picking a spot on the great elusive white-tailed deer, its all in good fun. 🙂

I just love it when Michiganders find each other on the forum! I love some wool and fleece too although down here in the south I can get away with some cotton/poly blend in warm weather. But you better listen to Patrick for your kind of cold weather. Welcome to the forum!
