Just wondering which State/States are the most renown for hunting Squirrels? Thinking I might want to make a trip South one day to chase your guys Fox and Gray Squirrels. After you point me in the right direction I’ll start looking into the regs and logistics of it.

I think the best places to hunt squirrel is in public parks. I remember some real beautiful black squirrels on the canadian side of the Niagara Falls 😀
Not sure what the regulations are concerning hunting squirrels in public parks 😳
Aside from tip toeing around peoples picnic baskets to hunt the little tree rats, I think you can find them about anywhere.
The coolest story I read about squirrel hunting was about a couple guys canoeing down a river in VA and shooting black squirrels from trees overhanging the river. Didn’t even have to get up to retrieve them. Just paddle on over. If the arrow didn’t dispatch them right away, the river would…
Sorry not much help in your planning…

I think Missouri has the most liberal season. Wisconsin’s season doesn’t start until opening day of archery deer season, except for landowners, who can hunt them year round on their own property.

Squirrel season here in Ga starts August 15 and runs through Feb 28th. Bag limit is 12 a day grey or fox.
Fox Squirrels aren’t near as plentiful. They prefer mature pine forest over deciduous forest. If you find a fox squirrel, you’ll find out they’re pretty “dumb” compared to a grey, and much easier to kill.
I honestly wish the limit was lower for fox squirrels.

Wild,
Squirrels can be found just about anywhere but down here any game land with some hardwood ridges or a good pin oak swamp is going to have plenty of grays and down east there are a few fox squirrels but I leave them be since they struggle to survive with the demise of the Loblolly pine here in NC.
I have visited Illinois around the Peoria area and stayed at a home near the Illinois River. I was impressed with the plentyful and huge fox squirrels everywhere. I did not hunt them as I had come there for the ducks on the river but always wanted to go back and try it. I saw plenty of squirrels in Maryland’s eastern shore including the Delmarva Fox Squirrel which was protected at the time so we had to let them be. They were fun to watch while on the deer stand though. There used to be a population of white squirrels in Chickahominy Park in Va but I have not heard anything about them in years. I beleive this is a WMA and it has been touted for good small game hunting in the past. Well good luck with planning a hunt. If you ever get down here to NC during the season I can steer you to some good squirrel hunting on public land.

One of the nice things about grays around here is their willingness to critique one’s shooting. Make a bad shot and they’ll stand there daring you to try again. Make a great shot and they’ll be three feet to one side before the arrow gets there. Several years ago before I got wise to it I’d empty my quiver trying to kill a single gray squirrel. It never worked, so now it’s three strikes and I call myself out. 😉

Arkansas has a pretty long season. Opened May 15th this year and runs to Feb 28th, 2014. Daily limit is 12. Possession limit is 48. With 2 National Forests, there are lot’s of opportunities to find bushy tails. Ouachita National Forest and Ozark National Forest are great areas, lot’s of open camping and hunting opportunities.

Thanks for the info folks, seems there is no shortage of Squirrel hunting destinations. Illinois seems to come up pretty regularly though, and maybe I could make it a twofer and catch a Blackhawk game after a few days chasing bushy tails.
