Has anybody hunted the Island of Assateague for the Sika deer?
Any recommendations on doing a self guided hunt..

Have not hunted Assateague specifically but I have hunted the refuge near Easton. We set stands about 100 yards into the swamp in flooded timber. Need knee boots for this. We determined the best location by the best sign entering and leaving the swamp. The beggars would not show till about dark. Assateague may be a different matter. I’m assuming there is some Maritme forest, live oak, cedar and pines on the island. I’d love to go there some day. Good luck with your hunt.

I’m from Montana and my hunting buddies and I are looking for an exotic hunt rather than white-tail or mulies.
So we are pretty much going into uncharted territory any info would help.

Wow and you guys ended up with Sika’s in Maryland! Kinda makes me a tiny bit proud of my state. I would suggest that you guys either do your hunt late or early! I would stay away from firearms season. Although I have never hunting the island, I do know that any place east of my house(western maryland) becomes a war zone during gun season, unless you are hunting private property! I would assume that Assateague is the same. Also, a couple of my good buddies that have gone down and hunted the little elk, say that most of the guys that hunt down there hunt close to roads and trails, like they are afraid of the boggie man. So I would say there is probably alot of good hunting hidding in the swamps!?

I understand the Sika rut occurs during the full moon in October. You might want to time your trip for that period. They do make a kind of bugle and can be called. Very fun!

An interesting hunt for sure. What are the rules when it comes a non-resident alien wanting to hunt “poor mans elk”?
