Hey, I’m pretty new to traditional archery. I want to make the switch form recurve to longbow. Now I only have a 26 inch draw. I had somebody tell me that should shoot a 58″ reflex/deflex bow with my draw length so I can use more power from the limbs. So my question is… is 58″ too short for a longbow? I know the reflex/deflex is a hybrd bow so they can make them shorter.

58″ is fine for a r/d longbow. My draw is 26.5″. I shoot a 60″ Great Northern r/d longbow and a 72″ bow of my own make. They both get the arrow to the intended target.

I draw just over 29″, and I just received my new 60″ Centaur Chimera, and it is smoooooooooth as butta’ (55# @ 29″). All bows are not created equal though. What works for one bowyer, may not work for another. Make sure you discuss exactly what you want with your bowyer…….

I shoot a 56″ wildhorse creek bow 54@28 and it shoots great at my 27.5 inch draw length I have also shot one of his 52″ bows and they draw smooth to 28″ no problem.Short bows are great for blind hunting and tight brush shoots.

i shoot a 58″ blackcreek banshee made by Jim Gainey, handles my 29″ draw well and hits where i look and its super quiet.

Herb Meland made me a 56″ one piece r/d longbow. It’s light as a feather and streaks an arrow.:)

Hard to go wrong with a pronghorn!

My next one will be a three piece 56″ Pronghorn. 😀
Now, which woods to choose… -
I have a 62″ in bamboo with a Bacotte riser. Its fast smooth and stable it would be great in the shorter length. Something stable in the riser makes it swing nice.

I draw 28″ and LOVE my 54# Shrew Classic Hunter longbow. Wish I’d gotten a 52″. But beware, not all short longbows (or recurves) are so forgiving … I recall my old Bears. dave

This is true, I had a Herters recurve in 52″ and it was a beast. Of course I didn’t think so at the time. Amazing how times change, just hope it doesn’t cost to much to learn those lessons

i recently bought a cooks mountain longbow, 53#@ my 27″ draw and love this bow! i wanted a 58″ but roy suggested a 60″ for my draw length so i assume 58″ would be fine for your 26″ draw. i suggest you give roy a call – very nice guy, knows his stuff, and makes excellent bows, affordable too. good luck! phone # 208-836-5502, doesn’t have a website yet but i think he’s workin on one

i always found “long” bows easier on my fingers…but…i have ‘polish sausage’ fingers that cover nearly 3″ of string when gripping the string…YIKES!
if you can, try bows of different length before purchasing; it may, or may not, make a difference to you.
