Guys I must say I need to first and foremost thank all of you that have questioned me as I raised questions on the forums in an effort to better use my weapon of choice, the Hill. Earlier this week I chose to take my light 55# recurve and my Hill out at the same time. I first shot with the recurve as a warm up bow. I made sure that my form stayed very consistent. I then picked up my Wesley Special and went to town with no pain and consistent shots as long as I could focus. I still noticed string slap though which is quite loud considering trad gear being used. Today just moments ago, I thought to myself while shooting, if the string is touching my arm at rest, then obviously its going to eat my arm like a wildfire as it is shot. I then remembered a frontal picture of Howard Hill shooting his bow, and he had this odd grip that caused his elbow to protrude out. I then recalled, forgive me because I do not remember who here said it, that it was said in the forums to do a grip such as this. I tried and and the next two arrows missed my arm guard completely and the arrows were dead center of where I was looking. I am going to practice as often as I can getting comfortable with this grip. I think this will greatly improve me as an all around archer, because I have noticed my skills with my other style bows getting better just because of my recent acquirement of a Hill bow and shooting it to hone my skills.
Thanks guys,
-Andrew

I found that if I grip firmly with the bottom two fingers of the bow hand and sort of ‘float’ the top two, that I have more control over the Hill style bow. Basically, that makes me put a lot of heel into the bow, and works great, at least for me. I also shoot with a slightly bent elbow of the bow arm. Everybody has certain things that may work for them and not for others, but this does work for me.

Yes, it is the little things that make all the difference. Folks ahve a hard time with the straight grip at first, until you realize these bow where meant to be gripped differently and heeled…they are not pistol grips:?
If you have not seen it yet watch the Schulz video. Lots of good tidbits in there:

I love when things come together. I watched as much as these videos as I could before it was dark. Ten minutes before dark I grabbed my bow and an arrow that had partial fletchings on them and ran out the door. I left my keys in the house so I couldn’t grab the glove and armguard. My first shot was from my porch. I did just as Mr. Schulz said and BAM I hit perfect. I ran out to the target smiling ear to ear and whispering to myself how awsome that was like a giddy school girl. I got my arrow and got about 10 yards away turned focused on the spot and not only burned a hole with my eyes, but the arrow mad it bigger when it passed through just where I was looking!!! 😆
I have been doing some arm exercises to strengthen my shoulder and with the form that Schulz suggested, the “in one motion shot” allows for my body to do the work rather than just my arms. I didn’t feel one pain or ache. Oh, and I don’t need to forget to add that I didn’t even hit my arm with the string!!!
Thanks guys once again for all of the info!!

I am not a facebook member and don’t want to be but would like very much to see these videos. Any other place to check them out on the web?

Seldomseen, I have looked online and at YouTube and I can’t find any other copies of this video. I signed up for an account at Archery Duns but it’s pending so I don’t know if an account holder with them can access the videos from that site. My guess is no. They seem to be embedded in Facebook. And I’m thinking that is a copyright infringement…but I could be wrong. Anyway, I found a copy of the video (VHS) for sale at Amazon.com for $49.95 😯 You might try calling Kustom King Archery or 3Rivers Archery to see if they have a copy. Might try your local library too, and see if they can order it.
Happy hunting,

I’ll approve your account so you can see what I’ve done.
The links I’ve posted are as you said to Youtube videos embedded in Facebook.
These video links give us a huge number of hits especially from your side of the pond.

Thanks, Berny. Small world indeed. 😀
Seldomseen, when I set up an account and logged into Berny’s site I could see the videos without logging in to a Facebook account. Please try it that way.
