I was just shooting my bow earlier today and I realized that my arrows were dropping when I shot. Soon enough I figured out the problem was do to my string hitting my sleeve. Keep in mind that I make sure whenever I shoot I wear a somewhat tight shirt so that this doesn’t happen. Eventually I just pulled up my sleeve and kept shooting. Obviously I can’t just pull up my sleeve when I hunt because I live pretty far north. So, my question is does anyone else have this problem and how do you fix it?

          arm guard?

lightly wrapped coban or ace bandage?

          rubber bands

I had a similar problem and my brace height was out. I twisted the string to bring the brace height to the suggested amount and that cured the problem. Maybe one of the first things to check.

I’ve had a similar problem before and started using an armguard to keep my string from hitting my sleeve. I wouldn’t want this happening when I’m taking a shot at game. Like Bruce said, you need to keep an eye on your brace heighth especially if you shoot B-50 like I do. Wayne

I was having a problem with noise as the string was slapping the arm guard a little bit. I spoke to my bowyer, Leon Stewart, and he suggest this.

Grip the bow normally and then hold it out at arms length horizontally. Rotate the bow in your hand until the string is away from your forearm.

Doing that allowed me to find the proper hold on my bow to get rid of the noise, increase accuracy and only with the baggiest of shirts do I ever get a tangle. Maybe it would work for you.

I still use an arm guard and when I’m hunting I wrap elastic around my upper bow arm to keep the coat out of the way. Precautions are worth the effort since just maybe everything won’t fall exactly in place with the trophy doe strolls by.

You might also consider opening your stance some, if the other options fail. I started facing more towards the target (per Fred Asbell’s book “Advanced Instinctive Shooting for Bowhunters”) and haven’t needed an armguard since. And I used to be pretty bad about slapping the crap outta my bow arm. The change in stance effectively changed the string to arm angles, so it hasn’t been a problem anymore.

I actually tried that the next day and it worked very well. (Fred asbell YAH!!!)

I have been using wide rubber bands to keep my hunting coats away from the string. Good tip about changing stance. I will give it a try when the sun comes up again.

Are you shooting with an “open” grip? I find this also helps with rotating the forearm away from the path of the string.

I quit wearing an armguard because I liked the painful reminder my form was off, I shoot better with an open grip and facing my target more directly so my bow hand is more to me string side…(someone mentioned GFA)

An armguard for the lower sleeve or one of those straps used to hold an MP3 player or Ipod to one’s arm when at the gym work great for the upper sleeve. No idea what you might call them. Your kids will know what I speak of I betcha. They may have some. That’s where mine came from.

I had a bursitis in my elbow once and had an elastic elbow band. I cut it into 2 pieces and they will stretch around my upper sleeve also. I keep one of these in my hunting gear and the other in my shooting gear. Never know.

I shoot with a straight bow arm so I need something to keep my sleeves out of trouble. Most of the time I don’t need anything for the upper sleeve due to my choice of shirts I normally wear (Sleeveless if warm enough :))but if I have to wear a bulky shirt or jacket a wrap of some kind is a must.
