I just bought a new (to me anyway) Bear Kodiak, 55# @ 28, RH. I just went to the range ( my back yard) and shot several arrows, with field points ranging from 100 gr to 175 gr, on 2217 aluminum arrows with feathers on a Bear Weather Rest.

Okay, now the problem. I shot very consistent, but was about 3″ x 3″ left and high respectively. The grouping was amazing, for me anyway, but of course I am disappointed in where my grouping was….. I have been shooting a long time, but am not an expert on most issues. And truth be told getting back into trad shooting after shoulder surgery put me on a crossbow for a couple of years. My other recurve is a 65# Bear Hunter Take Down.

The obvious answer is arrow spine being too heavy for this bow. I thought the heavier field points would pull more to the right, but was wrong on that assumption. Is the first thing to go with lighter spine arrows? Any info would be hugely appreciated. I had this problem with my 40# too, but with lighter weighted spines. HELP!

My 2 cents is that 2217s are really stiff for your 55# bow (and I am assuming your are drawing 28″). How do those arrows work in your 65# bow? I’d also ask how or why you got 2217s for that bow?

As a coach, I would first look to your anchor and release (form). If you shoot those arrows for a while and they are still shooting left then a shaft (spine) change would be in order. Are the arrows slapping or clanking the bow when you shoot? How are they flying (fishtailing/porpoising)?

No, the release is completely silent, the only real noise is when the arrow hits the target. I read an arrow chart wrong and ordered these…..Someone at 3Rivers said that they would work if I used heavier field points, this would pull them right.

These shot fine off of my 65# recurve. But it is a brute to pull back….now that I am a whisker away from being 60.

I will get a box of lesser spined arrows to try out.

Yes, I am drawing 27.9999 inches. The arrows do not fish tail or porpoise in flight. Not that I saw any way. I need my granddaughter shooting buddy to watch while I shoot to see if this is occurring.

            Thanks for writing me back.

It never hurts to shoot a bare shaft either… Let’s you know what’s going on.

If you are hitting your arm guard, it may show that you are torquing the bow too…

I appreciate that info. Today, I got a message from a guy at 3 Rivers, he told me to quit using the Weather Rest, shoot off the shelf.

Even off the shelf the 2217’s are way to stiff for a 55# bow. Youre going to need a lot more tip weight to get them soft enough to sine right.
