I recently switched from my 3D shafts to my hunting shafts and have noticed a difference in penetration into my target as well as increased resistance pulling them out of the target. Since my 3D shafts are well broken in, they penetrate farther than my brand new hunting shafts. (3D and hunting shafts are different but from the same manufacturer). Can I be loosing penetration (target and critter) with the new shafts and is there a popular lube to reduce friction on penetration that doesn’t smell like coal oil?

Here are some ideas from a Tip of the Week that ran.

My biggest concern is reduced penetration into game. It seems to me that if an arrow is difficult (resistance) to pull out (of my target), it must be difficult to push in, therefore a possible loss of penetration on game. I’m looking for something, a lubricant, that will allow penetration (as in not create resistance) as I am shooting a fairly light bow with 17.8% FOC. I’ll try the suggested silicone lube and see if that reduces my concerns and creates additional penetration into my targets.

Blood is pretty slippery.
If your broadhead ferrel is as big or bigger than your arrow, you are good to go. If the opposite is true, lubrication will not help you.

Wipe on some liquid or paste car wax. Let dry. Wipe off. Your shafts will be slick as a baby’s butt. Should come right out of your target with ease or go right through your deer with less friction. As Steve said – blood is slippery but blood on waxed shafts is Xtra slippery. 🙂
