Went out scouting for aoudad (Barbary sheep) last weekend. Not many around here but there are a few so it was worth checking out. These are pictures of old volcanic cones that they hang out on. the first is Cerro Cuate which is around 900 feet to the top. The second is Cerro de Santa Clara which is around 800 feet tall. The 3rd is Cerro de Guadalupe which is also around 800 feet tall. Rough country for sure. Water is a major issue out here so finding water in the Rio Puerco and/or cattle tanks is a major focal point. Did see 6 mule deer does but no aoudad but it was a fun trip just to be out scouting. I talked to my supervisor and his son got an aoudad off of Cerro de Guadalupe on Friday. Looks like there are some out there now it’s just finding them as they blend so well. Will be a tough hunt with a bow but should be a good challenge.

Thanks snafu72 you helped me recognize what I’ve enjoyed all these years about bowhunting.

Your welcome for Me theres nothing like bowhunting it just feels 100% different then rifle hunting I have shot 4 moose with a gun and not once did I have to wait or stalk it I just shot it bow hunting you cant just see and shoot you have to stalk and crawl within range of your prey My dream shot is 5 yards on a moose i cant think of a more Primal kill other than thrusting a spear into him but i am not that crazy or just knives on hogs that i would do if i had the chance
but any way Primal is the best way to describe the feeling i get when I BowHunt -
Well went out yesterday afternoon to hunt aoudad. The wind picked up to 30 to 40 mph so I glassed the lee side of the cones but only found cattle. Checked out a couple of water holes then sacked out in the back of my honda element. Had the wind rock me to sleep. Woke up and the wind hadn’t let up so I switched plans from hiking to the top of the lowest cone to glass the others to driving to different vantage points. Saw that the cattle and horses had taken over the good spots so figured the deer and aoudad stayed down in the canyons. Did find several new springs that I’ll keep checking in the future. Felt great to get out hunting something after being laid low with this cancer crap. Had chemo on the 23rd and it didn’t mess me up too bad. I’ll be keeping an eye on the weather and keep going back.
House sized boulder getting ready to fall.
