Ok folks I am onto the next chapter of my story. I have successfully harvest a doe this past weekend. I have the hide off and in the freezer and the deer has been quartered and is also in the freezer. I would have like to have let it hang for at least a day but the temperatures were not letting me do that.

I would like to tan the hid so I can hang it on my wall fur side out to place my bow and arrow holder on it. I know alittle about the tanning process but only enough to get me in trouble. I am not opposed to doing it at home but curious if taking it to a professional would be easier since I do live in a large city and do not have much room to work with at the house I rent.

I would think the internet would be chuck full of “how to” on self tanning. I knew one person who did it…big galvanized wash tub and one miserable mess outside… dunno if I’d want to tackle it indoors… but hey..

          See what others suggest…

I called a professional taxidermist and he will charge me $150 bucks for the tanning. I don’t know if that is an average price or not on it. I think for this first deer I would like it to be done correctly so that I can always have it. Then once I get another one or some small game to practice with then I might try to tackle a deer hide.

Knowing myself I would do something wrong or miss a step and ruin the thing or it would start smelling and I would have to toss it.

When your post notice came by email, I did a quick Google search… I was surprised how simple they make it sound on a dozen different sites…all different, but ended up the same.

Of course, getting it professionally done is a solid option without hassles.

Watch bugs and mice — friends tell me they love to chew on hair on tanned hides in the cabins, but this will be in your house!

… Unless he is setting it up for a wall hanging, backing, edging, etc…$150 isnt a bad price…

It sounds like $150 is for the tanning itself and anything else will be extra

                      NO!!! NO!!! NO!!!

Do it yourself, tell us all of the gory details, ao we don’t make the same mistakes you did, and waste all of that time, money, and suffer all of that embarassement. 😀
