After a month of working my butt off to try and take an elk, and all the intensity and sleep deprivation that goes along with it, it felt great to just grab a quiver full of stumping arrows and some lunch and go for a relaxed wander in the woods today. Absolutely therapeutic…

          Smithy,

This video just put a smile on my face. Really nice. Love the music. Love the country, love the shots. However, does this mean your elk season is over? No meat? If so, the video shows the reward is in the heart. Thanks for putting that up. best, dwc

You live in a beautiful part of the country Bruce. Thanks for sharing.

That was nice Bruce. I feel a little bit more relaxed just watching it. Glad you were able to just chill out and enjoy the walk, looks beautiful as always.

So you spend the day roving and setting up the camera for some nice scenes. Then you go home and edit it and get it uploaded. Whew! You must be mighty good at editing video and have a really good piece of software.

I like your butt pack! Do tell…

Oh yea, thanks for posting your good day! Sorry the elk didn’t cooperate this year.

While I didn’t get one either, I’ve been rehashing it a bit. I just got out my hammock seat that I bought last winter as a result of your fine appraisal of it. I strapped it to a tree and shot some arrows while seated in it. What a Joy! Had I thought to bring it and use it on my Colorado trip, I may have gotten that cow that almost gave me a chance. UGGG 😕

Oh well, Deer season has been good to me. Two so far, with a nice 7 pointer last night. Now it’s off to skin/quarter him and then to the coast for some albacore and trout fishing and setting up blinds for duck season…

Wish I was a good with the camera as you are…

Nice! Nothing like stump shooting, I agree!

                    Ahhh, yes, Bruce…

Excellent footage. I agree that you have some talent, but how do you get it to “dolly back” while you draw and shoot at it? Amazing work there, Hoss!!

BTW, when you sat the log for a bite of lunch, and turned, I USED to be able to pull my knee up like that without both hands!!! 😯

I guess Oregon’s season for elk is over for bow, You too?

My friend had a Cabellas pack like that (might’ve been bit smaller) with a belt and one shoulder strap, but they quit carrying them. I thought they’d be the bomb!

Ha – thanks, folks. Fun little evening project while savoring a frosty pint of Teton Ale. It was made using iMovie, which is pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

Yeah, my archery elk season went from 80+ days where hardly anything was moving or vocalizing, to 4 days straight of pouring rain at the end. A few “almosts” with bulls within range, but always something preventing the shot. General (any weapon) season opens up later this month, so I’ll get back out again, but it’s always harder once the guns start going off. I’ve got a couple other tags in my pocket though, so deer and bear are still good reasons for me to go wander the mountains.

Doc & Steve – that pack is a Bison Gear haversack. It’s a little bigger than most haversacks, and I’ve rigged it with a waistbelt (salvaged from an old pair of waders), so it rides behind me without flopping around. Very comfortable and well-made. They also make a smaller version called the “Houndsman.”

Steve, sorry to hear your elk hunt went similarly to mine. But time spent in elk country is never a waste of time!

Congrats on the venison, and good luck fishing. The harvest is in full swing!

A friend finished the Oregon season down along the Coast and had the same weather… He thought a few days then clearing as predicted would stir them up, but it never stopped raining buckets!

Bruce, I’m not surprised that Angelo would make such a fine pack. I’d thing the waistbelt would be the key to its suitability. Of course, Angelo tends to adapt any design a hunter wants… and they’re all very well made.

The shoulder strap would help keep the weight distributed.

Look out deer and bear…the “hammer” is about to sally forth!

Great video Smithy! Hate to hear it about the elk but bears oughta be out on the slopes gorging up for the winter.

I do have to say, if we shoot together in Arizona, you are going to make me look foolish. Great shooting!

Just watched, and enjoyed, your video very much. Brought a smile to my face and makes me want to head out for a little shooting.

I must admit, when you stopped at the log, turned your back to the camera and started taking your gear off I totally misread what was going to happen. I didn’t know your haversack had a waist belt and when you started fiddling with it I thought “Oh my god, he videoed a wee break?” 😆

                                  Ha – you’re a sick man, Jim.

And yeah, my wife said the same thing.

                                    Yep, great video!

I went for elk as well this year. Second time hunting them. It was a great adventure. But no meat neither! Had some close calls, and was drawing on an elk but he saw me move and jumped.

It would’ve been a weird shooting position. I need to practice more shots from mid-stalking-stride, crouching, and turning.

Video was an inspiration to go shoot!

Great video Smithy! I tell ya, since I took up the stick bows, stump shooting has become a second hand addiction for me! Typically, after a few hours of slow animal activity, I start eyeing up all the stumps around me. About 5 minutes of staring and off I go! The best part is, I always limit out and ya don’t have to field dress or drag anything! Although I’m betting they’d make a terrible stroganoff!

I wish I could just “load up and be gone” and go stumping!

I need to find me a close place to stump.
