As I sat watching dormant trees today I had plenty of time not to think of anything serious. Like the time as a young hunter I snuggled right into a nook on a steep hillside with my bow. As it was a big doe came in to within feet. I couldn’t draw back because my draw arm hit the mt! Duh. Any others just for fun?

First deer I ever shot an arrow at caught my draw ! I knew I couldn’t hold as long as he could stare so I let ‘er fly while he was looking right at me. I never would have believed it if I didn’t see it !! That bugger dropped almost onto his belly ducking my arrow !! I couldn’t believe it !!
I’ve gotten stuck like your story as well. Something spooked a 6 pointer out of the brush at first light one morning. He came rushing right at me !! I was hunkered under a large spruce and before I knew it, he was at about ten steps and staring at me !! Soon as I tried to pull back he was gone with a loud snort !!

Years ago when I hunted with wheelie bows out of trees I was on stand on a beautiful evening in the early season. As it started to get dark a beautiful buck approached on the trail I was set up on. I was so excited that as I reached for my bow I never took my eyes off the deer and knocked my bow off the hanger and down to the ground. Needless to say, I was quite glad no one was around to see that!

Whew! R2 I’m glad you said it. I was beginning to think I was alone… 😳

If I was to list the stupid things I’ve done it would be a list of trips to the ER, and encounters with law enforcement. Neither has happened as a result of bowhuning…yet.
If you think I haven’t done anyhing dumb, read Building The Bow.
What srikes me is that you did EVERYTHING else right. Congradulae yourself on that, and let the rest go. Had a boss who used to say “The only people that don’t make mistakes, are he people that don’t do anyhing.”

I saw a little herd of goats on a steep, scrubby hillside and put a stalk on them, getting within about 10-15 of the billy, shot about a metre over his back. That story repeated itself about 45 minutes later, identical shot and miss.
I thought ‘I am fast and I am fit, if a little African guy can do it, so can I’! I dropped my bow and quiver, took my knife and just started running after the billy. You wouldn’t believe it but goats are actually better at running around rocky, scrubby hills than I am 😕
After running my little legs into the ground (with goats seemingly laughing at me from every little ledge on the hill) I spent about an hour trying to find where the heck I had left my bow 😳

Jim – That’s a good one! You must have been hungry…
I chased down a whistle pig I caught in the garden once. Not sure who was more surprised that I could catch up to him, me or the hog. But once I did, I didn’t have the heart to do him in. I suspect you would have run into the same dilemma with the billy. Close is good, but there is apparently such a thing as too close.
I probably should have bonked that hog on the noggin though. The next week he ate our whole broccoli patch and I ended up shooting him with the .22. 👿

Wait, I can’t count that high. 😯

Bending over while you have a back quiver filled with arrows on, then playing pick up sticks. As long as know ones around to see, you’re ok.

Reckon if you put more weight up front they’d stay in the quiver? 🙄 Duh me!:D Probably just fall out quicker and with a thud instead of a clink:lol:
Hey Jim! What weight was the knife? Carbon haft?
Can you tell it’s colder than all get out and I have cabin fever already????:?:

First time ever in a climbing stand, a Baker, remember those? I had not scouted a spot but I did know where deer crossed a pasture and there was a grown up section that had been taken over by the Corp of Engineers for a lake so I went along the fence line looking for a tree to climb. After walking all around I finally picked a tree. I think I was overwhelmed a little not knowing which tree was the best one. So I go up. How high did I need to be? I don’t know 8 feet? So I’m sitting there all settled down and keeping a close eye on things and after a while I think I hear something behind me. I slowly turn and there behind me is a doe sniffing the tree where I touched it. Our eyes met and yep she was gone with a snort.

Funny, that reminds me of me and some friends scouting near the lake. I had brought a camo day pack that had my lunch and some extra clothes in it. I decided to set down next to some trees and get it on our way back. Well it took us at least an hour to find it when we came back. Guess I hid it too good!

Can’t remember ever making any mistakes. But this guy learned from his last year: ALWAYS bring two

Thought I made a mistake once… I was wrong…
Taking boots off to make a stalk and not being able to find them.. makes for a tough walk off the mountain in Arizona and I never found those boots…
Setting a stand WAY to close to a scrape, but it was the only tree I could use, figured I would surely get a shot before a buck hit the scrape… Wrong!!! a super Coues at 5FEET and no way to take a shot…

Oh, Goodie…reading these posts was like a walk back thru my life!
Baker climbing stands… tore all the hair off my chest and skin too boot… then watched my buddy in one slip to the ground—repeatedly
And while I’ve also shot arrows at deer looking directly at me, back in the day of the 8-arrow bow quiver, I was uniquely humbled as that doe stood there and ducked one arrow after another till my quiver was empty…then walked directly to me and stared like ‘HAAA-HA…you’re outa bullets fool!’
I’ve since read about that w/others, but to a 19 yr old, it was like magic! Last arrow shot, she jumped straight up and it stuck in the dirt bank behind her right where her heart would’ve been.
Incredible animals!
