I took it out yesterday, shot 5 arrows, and as I was reaching anchor for shot #6, crrraaac!! It scared the hell out of me! The carbon arrow broke in 1/2 too! I had a love affair with this bow since June 2010. I shot and hunted with it exclusively until last year. I was really bummed out yesterday, but happy that I didn’t get hurt too much, just a banger of a slap on the eyebrow and forearm! Gregg Coffey is such a great guy that he offered to build an Elkheart for 1/2 price! I’m not sure I will go the short longbow route again, but it was super nice of Gregg, who by the way is going full-time building Javaman bows!! So long Shrew, you’ve been great to me!

Ouch! Glad you are not seriously injured. I wonder what the break down was caused by. Anyone else ever see anything like this?

All the best to you Alex. Dwc

            That’s a shame Alex. Glad you didn’t get hurt more. T’was a pretty bow…

I know the feeling of “wearing” a bow when it fails. Makes ya think twice for awhile when you’re drawing another.:(

Kinda like getting bucked down off a horse though, gotta get back at it and go on.

Good luck on your choice of new bow.

that’s a shame, we have so many memories tied into our bows, it’s like losing a part of yourself when one breaks.

any idea what new bow you’ll pick?

Ouch !! Glad you didn’t get hurt ..

Had a string break on me at full draw .. Scared the living Christmas outta me !! I’ll admit I was a bit gun shy for a while ..

Do you think it can be repaired or the least relaminated so it can be hunt up on a stand or something ??

I’ve glued a few back together for the purpose of hanging on the wall. I’ve even glued a few back together and had them be shootable. But they are never the same.

One even reminded me that it really preferred to be broken 🙄 Stupid is as stupid does I guess.

Best just to let it go I think. Hang something else on the wall…

                    Nice pictures!

I’m really sorry to see that man. Glad you weren’t hurt.

A friend of mine gave me an Osage flatbow that detonated when I drew it. That was sort of exciting, and did effect my shooting for a while after.

Thanks guys! It really didn’t affect my shooting. I went out stumping with my Black Widow recurve the next day, and had a lot of fun. Now for the best part, I ordered a Longbow from BW. PL V 62″ 57#@28. Yes going back to my roots shooting a longer bow! I will post pics in 8 weeks! 😀

Alex congrats . I have a lot of friends with Widows but none that shoot their longbows, with that being said please let us know how you like it when it comes.

Man, it will be my 3rd BW longbow. I had a 64″ 63#, and a 62″ 55# before. They shoot like a dream! And built like tanks! I sold the 64″ to get the 62″, and sold the 62″ when I got the shrew back in 2010. 😀 I don’t collect bows.

Alex you mentioned a broken carbon arrow. This is likely what broke your bow. The carbon may have had a small defect or stress fracture which snapped on release due to paradox. The effect was a dry fire as only the back half was being pushed forward by the string.

It’s happened to me twice. Once with an aluminum and once a carbon. The carbon caused my limb to delaminate just like yours.

I’m no engineer but I imagine we increase the chances of this happening when we trend toward efoc. These days I only shoot wood from my longbow though I do shoot carbons from my recurve.

Very interesting, thanks. I think the string was still in my fingers when all broke loose, but I’m not 100% sure. Good point, though. I will keep that in mind and inspect my carbon arrow more closely from now on!

Alex, I’m thinking of ordering a PL-III take down. I have a PSR and love it but want to make the jump to the long bow. I’ll be interested to see your post when you get her.
