I’m relatively new to bow shooting. My question is, “I see fast-flight strings advertised by length {for recurve, or for long bow.] Is not a 58″ string a 58” string. I’m confused as to the difference between recurve and longbow in string measurement. Please help the pilgim. Thanks,

I’ll put my $0.02 in just so someone can tell me I’m wrong and I can actually learn something. 😈 Best I can explain is the following characters: | and ). Both are the same “height”, but one is obviously longer. So a 58” longbow and a 58” recurve may both be 58” when you measure along the limb, but they would take different sized strings. Hope this isn’t confusing, and I hope someone will correct me. Be well.

Usually, the string length refers to “AMO String Length” which is actually a few inches shorter than the bow. Longbow is 4 inches shorter and recurve is 3 inches shorter than actual bow length, if memory serves…
If you buy a string from 3Rivers, or others, they will usually ask for the “actual length” which is the length of the string as you measure it from end to end.
This is the most reliable way to do it: Just take the string off your bow, and measure it with a tape measure from end to end with the loops pulled tight and closed.

The AMO length is measured along the curves of the limbs and will be LONGER than the actual string length. I usually give the stringmaker the AMO length, the length of the strung bow measured from nock to nock (string groves) and add 1″ for the actual string length if stretched out loop-end to loop-end. Usually the strings I like on my recurves are 3″ shorter than the AMO length.
