Bow season starts 1jan2014 through 31jan2014 and I/m chomping at the bit… Recurve is shooting fine, scouting put me on some great Coues that hopefully made it through the 4rifle hunts this year, natural blinds are brushed-in, pack is kitted-out, all thats left to do is set tree stands after final scouting…
Photo is from last year, but there is a light snow up-top this year also…

Wow…neat looking country!
Good luck. You invest time in knowing your territory to hunt and the animals you hunt.
I wish you well. If that doesn’t equal success, it surely will mean you’re not wondering if you are in a good place, even though your lust might make you wander some!
Have a great time out there and BE SAFE!

Thank You DocNoc and MHay… When I first hunted this mountain range, comeing from NY where we hunted 1300acs and thought that was a massive piece, I was overwhlemed by the sheer size and varied terrain of the Santa Ritas. By taking small chunks and walking them in a grid, I have learned the better travel areas and some knowledge of the Coues that inhabit this amazing range.
I have spent the most time centered on Madera Canyon for the past few years just because it is the most scenic, the Deer numbers are highest, hunter pressure is lowest, but I have hunted most of the westeren slope…
I still find old silver/gold diggings and Indian camps every year, so the Mt’s still have alot to give…
(This is the busy time of the year for the smugglers, so Safety and situational awareness are paramount…)

Is it 1January 2014 YET???
I’m getting twichy for the begining of my Bow Season, checked an area I normaly set a tree-stand and found a salt-block, recently placed out, about 40yards from the tree.
I found out who it was from another web-site, Good guy that I put on some Coues during the rifle season, I shared info on the class of Coues in that area and found out what each other are driving so we can share the spot without hassles…
It may be a blessing, because I went farther up-slope and built a ground blind in a spot where I always wanted to make one, VERY heavy sign with a good set-up of constricted trails coming together, so hopefully the beast Coues I’ve been seeing the last couple of years with no shot offered, gives me look this year and the Recurve can sing…

1shot glad to here that there are more trad archers in south east Az. I live down near the whetstones and have the mule deer walking thru the front yard mostly small bucks but have seen some big boys in the neighbor hood. Yep! in the neighborhood not out where I can hunt them without upseting the neighbors!. And there is alot of private land here and have not been able to get access yet. I too am looking forward to the January hunt. Good luck on your hunt and be careful out there. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year !:)

Keep us posted on your season! The area you are hunting looks so foreign and interesting to a northerner like myself:) We have until Jan 15 to fill our white tail tags (doe only after the 1st) and I still have two to go! The Coues deer sounds like such a fun and challenging deer to hunt. I’m paying attention to all who write here on Coues Deer as I hope to hunt them some day.
Best of luck and be safe.
