Hey guys, not really archery related other than the fact that I cannot shoot outside today due to the rain. This is the first rainy day that we’ve had here in Amarillo in a year and a half or more. It won’t cure the drought but this part of the world needs a break and the animals need a reprieve. Quail are nearly non existent at my hunting area, I see very, very few rabbits anymore and we had a pretty high fawn mortality rate last year due to dry conditions. Drought hurts everybody and I feel blessed today!

Now question! I know there be a lot of variables and what ifs but @ 27′ draw, 45/46 #’s would, in general, 3555 Goldtips be a reasonable choice to start playing with carbon arrows w/longbow? Seems sense what I can make out of charts to maybe be so. Or maybe what deflection figures with carbons in general. Wood and alum. simple to me because of 35 yrs. of using. Carbon Greek to me.

Glad to hear you folks are finally getting some rain. I have a friend who just returned from visiting family in Texas, and said that over half the trees in his folks yard had already died of drought. I hope this batch of rain is not your last.

Do you want to “fool around” with high foc? I shoot GT 7595’s and have 400 grn on the front. I bare shaft tuned them and they shoot straight as an arrow:wink:. Granted I have a 32″ draw, so I don’t know how those would be really stiff at your draw I would imagine.

              Ralph,

What kind of point weight are you wanting to use? Picking the right carbon shaft isn’t that hard once you know the point weight and how much before, center, or past center the sight window is.

I’m looking @ 125 gr./145 gr. mainly cause that’s what I have a lifetime supply of them seems. My longbows are mainly before center. I have a center shot one that so far will shoot anything I put through it. It’s just a center shot shoots different to my brain than a before center does. Got the science figured though & doing good with it. Nother story! I will try FOC+ someday but now I’m mainly interested in getting started with some carbons. 28″ draw when doing right but I’m happy if I consistently shoot 27″. I actually will go with 281/2″-29″ cause my draw is longer when shooting at game and stump shooting than it is when you put points on a 3-D target (Target panic under peer pressure it seems).

I shoot pretty much 500-520gr. 45 thru 50# bows (also results of 35 yrs. of learning 10-11 gr. per in). I have some arrows in the 450-460 gr. that shoot well also. So there we go Troy. I think I saw that Carbon Express 150’s would be in the ballpark also. I’m a learner so I’m curious.

                  Ralph,

The 150 CX shafts was going to be my suggestion. They will give you more overall weight than the 3555 if I’m not mistaken.

The 150cx if I remember right is supposed to be slightly under .500 def. something like .525 def.

The 3555 is supposed to be .500 def.

I’ve found that most before center cut bows like the lighter spine.

Thx Troy. I’ll go from this info and give a try before long and let you know.

A few weeks ago a couple of close friends and I were out shooting targets. I had my 45# recurve and a 1/2 dozen arrows- 3 GT 5575’s and 3 GT 3555’s. While the 5575’s shot well from my bow, the 3555’s were too weak. I shot the 3555’s fromm Z’s 40# longbow and they shot really nicely. I draw 28″.

Yeppers, I think I be right on the edge of 3555’s being borderline weak. I’ll probably go with 5575’s as I can always weaken spine with weight up front. I think I know where I can get some 3555’s though for a really good price to try and start with 29” and shorten from there if need be. 3555’s may be the ticket from my longbow. 5575’s from recurve and center shot longbow. Kinda under the weather right now but should be back up and running in a few days. Apparently the pneumonia vaccine is not foolproof.

Were you so excited to see rain that you gasped? 😆 I hope you are feeling better real soon!

Thx Robin. Actually shot a dz. arrows awhile ago but my tail is so sore from Rocephin shots. I be tough ol buzzard and can’t wait to try some carbons.
