I’m looking for a new shaft to replace the discontinued MFX. It’s a bummer, because I’ve been using them successfully along with my wood, for a number of years. I hate to change things when they ain’t broke. Any feedback you could give me on the AD traditional would be greatly appreciated. My only experience with tapered shafts is with grizzlystyks , which were a nightmare for me, regarding the fitting of the arrow components (inserts, nocks, etc…)

My #1 concern is: is it true that you can change the upfront weight freely without altering spine and flight??? I don’t get how this is possible.

#2: do components fit snugly on both ends?

        Thanks.

Alex — I doubt you’d be interested in “moving down” to plain old Carbon Express shafts, but you know the good luck I’ve had with them. They are not tapered, and some other carbons are lighter and/or slimmer, yet I’ve found them to be totally reliable, they accept all “generic” internals, and provide a wide range of spine for EFOC. Perhaps they are tractors rather than sports cars, but that’s what we want when the “bullet” meets the bone. You might also want to run a classified ad searching for more of your old favorites. It’s likely that some arrow makers, bow shops, etc. somewhere still have a stash of those shafts.

Brother, you should be here now. You’d have to soak your fingers in warm water before playing the piano. But hey, it keeps the tourists away … unlike this time of year in the Caribbean, where you’ll be sweltering on some filthy tropical beach while I’m enjoying late January in Kalamazoo. 😆 Dave

            Dave,

I looked at the manufacturer’e website, and they did come up with a “better” version than the MFX. Maybe I’ll get them.

I don’t want want black arrows. It would remind me of my short compound phase. You don’t have that problem 🙂

              Alex–

You could try Gold Tip Tradionals – they are wood grained finish and shoot well from a couple of my r/d bows. I am shooting the 55-75s with 170 Bbears 100gr steel adapters /100gr brass inserts for an arrow around 700+grs [28 1/2″]

They are not Black anyway -haha

                Alex,

Who makes MFX arrows? I use carbon express now but thought of going with easton or beaman (made by easton) when I get my new bow. They are made in the US that is the only reason I thought of switching. The carbon express are great arrows and I have not had any issues with them.

Alex — I recently asked Ed Ashby which carbon shaft he thought was all-around best, at least for now, for heavy heads and EFOC. He said he likes the Gold Tip Ultralights. Not the Ultra Pro or any of the other variations, but just the plain Ultralights. You might check ’em out. Has anyone here used these? Alas, they’re as black as my heart on a dark night. While I have no negative associations with black shafts like you do, darned if I want black arrows which will go into hiding when they’re shot. But given how you love hunting deer in the snow, maybe black would work well. The CE Heritage I use are wood-grain; not tremendously realistic but at least they’re not black or pink or purple.

I love the AD lites for my Hill bows. The are very forgiving for me and I shoot them out of my 50 and 60 pound bows at the same 29 inch length with excellent arrow flight. I do foot the point end and nock end with aluminum which makes them about bomb proof!

I have been back to shooting wood though lately as I prefer the “feel” and type of mercury nock I can get on the woods. Not a fan of small skinny nocks.

I’ve used the Gold Tip Entrada shafts with a 50lb longbow and a 56lb recurve. These are the 600 spine arrows, and I am using 250 and 300 grain heads on them. Which seems crazy. But they fly well. I have not used them for hunting yet.

These shafts are about 5 grains per inch, and make a super efoc setup. I figure that’s why the low spine works on my bow weights. I expect the higher spine versions would probably be better in the end though…
