So… I have been testing my hunting arrows with both Field Points and Broadheads and noticed that my FP’s are nailing the Bullseye at 20 yards – arrows are tighly packed against each other at 20 yards. I am using 145 gr FP’s.

I go to shoot my STOS Broadheads with 130gr weight and my flight accuracy is less than stellar for most arrows with broadheads. I am going to change the BH’s to 145 Gr Eclipse BH’s. And refine my point tapers to be more exact where the ferrule is actually flush with the shaft.

BUT.. I am wondering if anyone has any other suggestions.

Well 15 grains doesn’t sound like much but it can affect flight, especially when going to a lighter broadhead; the b.h. weight is spread out over a longer length as well…making the arrow just a tad stiffer overall. If you had some weight collars they would probably act more like your field points. Might be worth a try.

Is your broadhead alignment good or perfect? Did you paper tune or bareshaft your field point arrows? Broadheads are much more sensitive to the right spine than field points.

My cousin just told me about this, and it might help you. O.L. Adcock has an essay about bow tuning, and in it he explains arrow tuning with broadheads and field tips. its about midway through the thing, all 18 pages of it, but its all well worth the read. hope this helps!

Thanks, All. Yes, the spine is correct. I suspect it is more of an alignment issue. So I am going to increase the broadhead weight a bit and re-taper the point taper.

I suspect another piece of this is me – since I do not practice with broadheads all the time only about a month or longer before the season opens.

Had to inspect and fine tune my point tapers a bit. As well as adjust my Nock Height. Good to go now. 8)

I’m happy to go up in broadhead wheight over my field points,,,but never under.
My thinking is that I do all my tuning with field points because I shoot them much more than I do broadheads.
So if I’ve got everything sorted with my field points an then shoot any lighter wheight in a broadhead,I’ve just reduced my FOC in the one area it’s the most important.
Go the other way and I’ve incressed it,,which so far has only ever been a good thing.
I do shoot broadheads for 3-4 days before I go on a hunt because I find I shoot low when I first switch over,,,I put this down to the incressed length of my arrow an the fact I do see my arrow tip as part of my over all sight picture.
                      Other than that,,she’s all good.

                      John.
