Hey everyone,
I’m about to propose an idea as if it’s an original thought. It’s not. It’s a blatant plagiarisation of a good idea someone had on an Aussie forum.
Anyway, I’ve had this great idea! As lots of shoots have been cancelled around about the place, why don’t we do a tradbow shooting comp? What do we need? We need someone to post a couple of printable A4 targets (I have a bunny target that would be suitable) and some rules (distances, number of arrows, scoring) then we could all print the targets, put them on our own backyard targets, shoot our rounds and post the result here.
What does the winner get? Something money can’t buy of course… Sweet, sweet pride.
What do you guys think? If we wrap this up this week we could have an easter weekend tournament 🙂

During WWII when gasoline and other supplies were hard to come by because production was geared toward the war effort, the NFAA did write in contests as well. Same idea, only now with pictures and printable targets.
I used to fill in my scorecard at shoots, but never did well enough to bother turning it in. Eventually, I just quit with the scorecards as it was less bother and more fun that way.
I do miss walking the course (or roving the woods) and shooting the bull with friends. This will be fun to watch!
-
The only time I ever filled out a score card and turned it in was when they were drawn for door prizes. I did actually win a couple of items.
We mainly just shoot for the fun of it.
I went to a 3D shoot a local club put on and joined up with two fellas to walk the course. We were the only three at the shoot with trad gear and I was shooting a BBO I had just made. We had a blast and never filled out a score card. The wheel shooters with their fancy bows, rangefinders and binoculars seemed too serious and took forever to shoot.
A lot of them looked at my BBO like it was something a caveman would carry.
-
I’d be happy to throw in a couple of things for prizes. If you get the details together by Tuesday night, I can put something in this week’s tip email to see if anyone else would like to participate. Anyone who wants to do this would have to be a member on our site in order to post scores, comments, etc. in the forum. Might bring a bit of activity to the forums. I’m hoping that’s a good thing?

Hey Aeronut;
Last year I was at our local public archery range doing some shooting on the practice bales. Had a couple of wheel-bow shooters watching me. One of them finally commented “I didn’t know you could do that”. I asked what, shoot without sights ?? He said no, he didn’t know that you could shoot without a RELEASE. I told him that it’s so easy that a caveman could do it.
Made my whole day !!!
>>>>>>>>>> I don’t have a printer………… How about we just shoot at that old stand-by, paper plates ???
-
Fine with me Jim
I have not shot in competition in yrs so R2 or Richard might give us some rules and yardages – i like the paper plate( 81/2″ or larger ?) idea. I Havn’t shot past 25 yds in years either —

Hey guys, great ideas in your feedback. Let’s shoot a tournament with the following rules:
TRADBOW QUARANTINE ARCHERY TOURNAMENT
Targets:
A: Paper plate, 8 1/2″ (alternate options: larger plate with 8 1/2″ ring marked inside, a square piece of paper 8 1/2″ sides)
B: Credit card sized piece of paper, about 3 1/2″ x 2 1/4″ (alternate options: old business card, standard playing card, anything about that size)
Rounds:
1. 10 yards, 3 arrows at paper plate (10 pts/hit)
2. 15 yards, 3 arrows at paper plate (15 points/hit)
3. 20 yards 3 arrows at paper plate (20 points/hit)
4. 10 yards, 1 arrow at card (40 pts/hit)
5. 15 yards, 1 arrow at card (60 pt/hit)
6. 20 yards, 1 arrow at card (80 pts/hit)
Total possible score: 315
Score recording/reporting:
The honour system 🙂 Just reply on here with your total score and scores per round. If you can post photos of each round that’s great, just for us all to see and feel more engaged with each other, not for verification.
Shoot as many sets of the 6 rounds as you like, but only your first set score will count so we’re all on the same playing field. If you get an amazing score after that, post it for us all to cheer you on, but only your first set will count to the event.
Range restrictions:
If you can’t shoot out to 20 yards, replace the rounds you can’t achieve with the longest round you can. Points for the replacement range will be per the distance you are shooting. Let us know what your range restriction is when posting your score.
Example – If you only have a 10 yard range your rounds will look like this:
1, 2 and 3: Each round = 10 yards, 3 arrows at paper plate (10 pts/hit)
4, 5 and 6: Each round = 10 yards, 1 arrow at card (40 pts/hit)
Total possible score: 210
Prizes:
Webmom has very generously suggested donating a small prize. My feelings are given the honour system of scoring and in the spirit of a friendly tournament, no prize is necessary. However, this is the Tradbow forum and Webmom is queen, and I certainly acknowledge the opportunity to generate some interest.
I will maintain my original offer of sweet, sweet pride. Enough to feed a family of 5.
Webmom, I’ll leave any prizes of a more tangible nature to your sound judgement 🙂
Hopes and dreams:
This little archer will be happy if he scores in three figures. I hope everyone just has a go and has some fun.. we’re all friends here 🙂

Jim, thanks for all the work you put into this. Let’s see how this works out within our group and any friends you all can invite. Please remind them they need to sign up as a member on the site if they are not already.
I totally understand your option for the only prize being sweet, sweet pride, and I’m good with that. I’m looking forward to seeing how this all works out.
Mom/Queen? Ha ha

I like it !!!
Could I suggest adding a one arrow, one yard, down-angle snake type shot ?? Maybe at a half card. (Don’t laugh; it’s harder than it looks.)
………….and a title !!! Something subtle like Inter-National Trad-Bow Quarantine Archery Tournament Champion 2020.
Question; Starting cold or warm-up shots ?????
Edit for speling
-
One more suggestion, if I may;
When posting scores, note ‘curve, long or self bow, poundage, arrow material and split or 3 finger under.
This is gonna be fun !!!
-
Ok I started this morning. I’m shooting a selfbow and wood arrows. I took 9 warm up shots, but none from the prescribed distances. Here’s my results:
1) 30
2) 30
3) 40
4) 0
5) 0
6) 0
Total points 100
This was fun it added some pressure. I think I’ll do it every morning. The picture is my 10 yard group.

Haha
It looks like the game is afoot
I’ll have to get out there and give It a shot

(1) 30
(2) 45
(3) 60
(4) 40
(5) 0
(6) 0
(7) 10 ………… I took a 10 point bonus snake shot @ a half card / 1 yard.
Total 185
A fun little round !!!!!

Q shoot
I used my 54″ shrew classic hunter ( Coffey built) 56# @ 27″ and shrew firefly w tuffhead brass points -wood arrows . Split finger – I stretched, but shot it cold. For reasons i’ll comment at the end .
Paper plate 8 1/2″
10yd —30pts
15yd—-45pts
20yd—-60pts
Playing Card
10yds —40pts
15yds—-0pts
20yds—-0pts
Snake shot bonus rd —- 0pts – it is harder than it looks
175 pts
I was happy I hit the plate every time as that is my hunting ( kill area) goal. Although it was touch and go on a couple ( just caught the plate) But was surprised how poorly I grouped especially at close range. I think Jims idea makes an excellent proficiency/ qual course. Ie shoot it cold ( only every month or so* ) to see if your trng is keeping you in hunting trim. I normally shoot at tgts with no aiming point so i have to pick a spot . I found it more difficult to pick a spot on the plate for some reason( probably just shot at the whole plate ). I am going to shoot this periodically to see what happens and I will also black out the plate ( can’t see it) see if it causes any differences in grouping.
I really enjoyed shooting at the card very challenging and real – shooting one arrow from each distance.
The snake shot was tuff for me. Never shot that close before – of course I hit subsequently but only cold counts haha.
Thanks Jim a lot of fun
Scout aka Ray
PS if you are wondering about the angle –my range is in an Arroyo that curves behind my house thus, the angle of the arrow changes the further out I get
Need to work on my precision before I try to go turkey hunting again —
Pss
For those interested in not breaking an arrow I shot the snake shot from a step stool contraption I have, so I could lay the tgt on top of the hay/ sand/ tgt debris and shoot at a downforward angle at it.

Ray, I have noticed that some days when I shoot my 3D turkey and bobcat targets I have a time I don’t pick a small spot. When I find myself doing that I switch over to shooting at some small soda bottles I have hanging in my trees. The smaller target size makes me concentrate on a smaller spot and my shots are a lot better.
I haven’t tried the paper plate contest yet. The last two days have been very high winds and today I was busy. Maybe tomorrow.
-
Got out this morning before the wind came up here.
Shot the round as outlined above, then added a bit to it.
For the second leg, I dropped the bonus shot, scoring the same as the first leg but moved back to 15-20 & 25 yards.
For the third leg, no bonus shot, still using the same scoring but moved back to 20-25 & 30 yards.
Perfect score would be 955 total……………………. I was pretty happy with a 505 for the three round total. Kind of neat to be able to have a bit of added pressure of shooting ‘for score’. It’s paper but can only help my 3D shoots.

Aeronut
Yes on switching to smaller tgts to help focus ( on picking a smaller spot). I noticed a tightening of my group when I switched to the card. Yes, try the course it’s fun and more challenging than you might think.
Richard
Haha you are getting after it ! I might try the 15/20/25. But that probably is the limit of my ” instinctive” shooting skills. At least for the size of my current tgt backing!

Ray;
I’ve got another paper plate routine where I shoot one arrow from 5 yards. If I hit the plate I move back to 10. Every time I hit the plate, I move back 5 yards. When I miss, that’s where I shoot from for a while.
One thing that I’ve learned ………………. aiming at the whole plate is a good way to miss the whole plate regardless of the distance.
Amazing what idle minds can come up with !!!!!

Richard
Yes, to all your last comments. This little shoot has shown me how stagnant I have become over the winter. Need to change it up a bit.
I like aeronut’s swinging bottle routine- but would have to put it in front of a backstop on my range, as I would lose a lot of arrows to breakage in my rocky Arroyo.
Maybe some of the other members have a special trng regimen they can share? I was hopeing some more folks will shoot the match ?! Maybe they are out turkey hunting —

Hey guys,
So sorry for the delay, work stuff came up just as easter struck. Quiet again now! I went and did the shoot. Boy oh boy what a wash.
1) 10
2) 15
3) 20
4) 0
5) 0
6) 0
Total = 45
For the sake of my pride, my groups were about as good as I normally shoot, I was just shooting high and left every single time. One of those days that makes me want to kick instinctive into the bin and resume point of aim (but I won’t, I’m just going to shoot more!). Anyway, if webmom accidentally deletes this thread my feelings won’t be hurt!
Haha, well, Im late to my own party but I hope everyone who participated (or watched from the sidelines) enjoyed it!
Jim
PS good shooting to everyone else!
-
Hi Jim
It is a good course ! Much harder than it looks! I think it is an excellent “proficiency test” to see if you are staying in trim for hunting. I am going to shoot it cold once a month and see what happens. Thanks for coming up with the idea. Hopefully some more folks will shoot it and post their results.
Switching bows recently as you mentioned probably had some effect on your score — keep shooting
