Was going on scouting hikes with the wife and dog before season started. Every timber gate I came across had a four track road blowing around the gate. How long till the timber company’s say enough is enough and make all area’s ” NO ENTRY”. I was 5 to 6 miles in and seeing ATV sign.I seen were they had went down in creek bottom’s “scouting”.The abuse these guy’s are doing is rampant everywhere!

Same is largely true on public lands — the efforts to stop the motorhead outlaws are minimal, laughable, cryable. I take pictures and raise hell every time I see it, and strongly advise you to do the same. Write and call the timber company, and send a copy of your letter to local papers to embarrass them into action. These jerks are killing us.

Mixed emotions on my part. I do not own a Quad… nor can I afford one. I’m not against them…. as long as the owner is responsible. But as far as HUNTING is concerned…. I have had to learn to adapt.
Today’s Outdoor Sporting industry pushes SO hard to make the “novice” and inexperienced hunter believe that… “If you have THIS bow”…. or “If you have THIS 4-Wheeler”…. or “If you have THIS brand of arrow”… ect… ect… “You will be more successful.” And when it comes to 4-Wheelers….. I see the same thing out in Oregon. Many “Wannabe” hunters buying the latest and greatest 4-Wheeler and are using it in an inappropriate manner. And though it is VERY frustrating… (especially when you took it upon yourself to walk many miles into the woods,) I have found a VERY bright Silver lining around this cloud!
These “hunters” don’t like to get too far form their equipment…. and all I have to do is find the area in which they CANT get into!!! (Very brushy…. heavy timber!) The more I see road hunters…. whether they are in their trucks…. or on their quads…. the more I KNOW that they keep the deer and elk away from the roads…. and push them back DEEP into the thick cover! I find myself hunting completely ALONE…. and usually there is plenty of game around.
I learned to adapt…. and I’m seeing more game than ever!!!
Respectfully,
Donnie

Frankly, you can’t get anywhere close to big game using motorized gear unless it’s a Zoo. Join BHA or other groups that can help educate those that don’t understand the damage that vehicles do to the mountains. It’s not just motorized vehicles that are a part of the problem however. More and more I am seeing mountain bikes in the woods as well, despite signage and penalties.

It’s is neither the bike or atv that is the problem, it’s the boneheads using them. Have you turned anyone in? Here in Pa., they will pay a hefty fine, and they are as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. Set up a hidden game camera and help catch them. We’ve got a few here on the Pa. State SGL’s and once fined, they rarely return.

George,
What part of PA are you from? Here in SE PA (Lehigh Valley) I would agree with you. SGL 205 is pretty well patrolled. Our WCO is diligent and he does write fines. Problem is, my buddy from the army is a DWCO up north in the Scranton area and he says that there, the laws are not well enforced. The WCO for the area does write citations, but the magistrate throws them all out, so people know that if caught, the worse thing will be a trip to the magistrate to have the citation tossed. Actually, one magistrate is actually one of the worst offenders. Yes, there are good people riding ATVs. These people respect the land and others around them. There are also slobs, just like in hunting, fishing, etc. I wish there was an easy solution. But I do agree that stricter enforcement and stiffer penalties are a good deterrent.

Hey Alex, thanks for the response…things like that are good to know. Magistrates can be recalled, if they are disregarding law enforcement citations. We had that very thing happen here about fifteen or more years ago. They certainly are not above the law, but unfortunately the scum will rise to the top now and then. A letter to the editor of the daily paper, from caring citizens, can maybe do some good.

George — Unless I missed something you’ve been away for a while. Good to have you back. Dave

Thanks Dave. Being retired, I find myself so busy sometimes I can’t get out of the woods. 8^)). We’ve been working on a cabin on our farm here in the hills, and it’s a slow process. Hope to have it ready for the first day of archery season. Just have paneling to put up, get the stove working..(hard to think about in hot weather)..and build a nice outhouse. 🙂

I hate atv’s! I belong to a 900 acre lease in north ga that has a great road system. I drive my truck in 2 wd all over it with no problem yet 90 percent of the other guys in the club park at the cabin and ride their atvs in. Its so sad to hear one come by you just at daylight. Most of us have working legs. Lets try and use them

A Modest Proposal (with apologies to Jonathan Swift): unlimited, either-sex, OTC ATV tags. Just think about it. Don

While I am not Don I think for broadhead i would recommend a VPA 200gr since the last one I went stump shooting with hit a rock and stuck in when I missed the target. Any poundage should do a good pass through or you could always count coupe and hit the driver with your limb of your bow when they drive by. 😆

Resurrect the “Pod”, load it with sugar, and aim for the gas tank. Hold for the lower third though–sometimes they jump the string. Don

2 years ago motorheads decided they could convert my cousin’s wooded property into an ATV playground and access route to public land. They even started cutting down trees and clearing paths. I blocked their paths and put up “no motor vehicle” signs. They shot the signs full of holes before tearing them down. So I had a talk with a local ATV rider who knew the other locals and suggested that their two options were to either respect my signs or respect my bucket of roofing nails. It solved the problem with regard to my cousin’s property, but they found other routes and much of the larger territory is simply no longer huntable.
