So, I decided to build myself a bow. While I’ve been doing cabinets and trim for over 20 years, this will be my first try at a bow. I’ve been gathering info and studying designs and have some ideas but what I’m wondering about is the limbs. I saw somewhere that for a three under shooter, the lower limb should be slightly shorter. Is this true and if so, how much shorter ??

Nope. I don’t know a single bowyer who adjusts the limb length of his designs based on split finger or three under. They may tiller slightly different though.

I’m assuming your planning to make a selfbow. If so, some do make the lower limb 1″ shorter. I never did, I always made both limbs the same length and I’ve made quite a few self/primitive bows.
If your talking glass laminated bow…. always make both limbs the same length.
Some say for three under the limbs should be tillered even. For split I always tiller my limbs in a method that is refured to as postive tiller… i.e. distance on lower limb from limb to string is shorter by 1/8″ to 3/16″.

I shoot 3 under and I like the bow to be even tillered. Meaning the distance from the back of the bow to the string is the same for the same point on each limb.
