Many years ago, I’m guessing age 11 or 12, I bought a Ben Pearson Tournament 7010 recurve from a friend.  I shot it until I outgrew it.

Later my sister asked if I had a bow her boys could use to earn their archery merit badge in Boy Scouts so I loaned her the 7010.  Both of the boys used the bow and earned the merit badges.

I had basically forgotten about the bow until the oldest nephew handed it back to me with a strip of duct tape wrapped around the lower limb.  He explained that somewhere along the line someone had dropped it pretty hard and a splinter had lifted.

A couple of weeks ago I got it off the hook and decided to try a repair.  I finally got all the petrified tape gunk cleaned off and then filled all the gaps with Smooth-On epoxy.  A couple of hours in the hot box and some cleanup finished that up then it was time to make a new string.

Yesterday was my 70th birthday and my daughter took me out to eat.  I took the bow along and handed it to my granddaughter.  She got started shooting a bow around age five or six and is active in the Archery in the Schools program.

A couple of other projects I’ve got going are this little Osage selfbow.  It will make a kid bow if I can get that skinny tip built up.

One of my cousins who is more like a brother asked if I would make him a light draw weight bow.  I loaned him a bamboo backed Osage to play with and started thinking about what to make.  I decided to use Curly Tiger Maple laminations with a Hickory core covered with .040 clear glass.  For a long time I have pondered on what to do to give this a special touch and it finally came to me.  He has always been a Beagle fan and has three of them so I made some riser overlays and set them up in my laser engraver.

The Curly Tiger Maple and Hickory

The back of the riser Overlay.

          The belly overlay.

After final tillering and measuring the final draw weight I’ll laser engrave those specs just below the squirrel.

Now I have to clean up the pile of stuff off my workbench.
