Found a number of deer hitting water oak acorns that were dropping in a firebreak. Shot this doe this morning at 7 or 8 yds….she walked off unconcerned…..no more bothered by the shot than by a mosquito bite. Though the shot felt perfect, I got worried about the placement after finding no blood, and only rumen contents on the arrow. In the end she only went a little over 100 yds, and died quickly just out of my sight…..the Magnus 1 managed to double lung her and get some gut too. I’m mighty thankful for a good hunt and for the meat. Our freezer was empty, and I’ve got a couple of hungry chilluns.:D
Good hunting, all.

I love it when a plan comes together !! Well done, and looks like a great shot too. I once shot a bear that was so unaware of being hit, it only flinched slightly at the sound of the shot and then turned to sniff the arrow that had just passed through it. He did try to run after about 5 seconds or so but only because he was starting to stumble and didn’t know why !!
Congrats on a good harvest !

Nice long nosed doe. The very best eating there is. I am glad someone else worries about feeding the wee wonders too. I wasn’t out, but I was down to 6 packs of burger when I got my first deer this year….
The wife was giving me that look, like if I didn’t come through, she was going to have to go to the store…

That’s the first thing I noticed about this doe, how long her face is. It’s probably the longest face I’ve ever seen on a deer. Is this a subspecies? Are they common?
Besides all that, great animal and great job!

Congratulations, I’m sure I can smell venison cooking!

Congrats on a fine mature doe. It’s nice to put the first one of the year in the freezer.

Congrats again brother and great shot!
I know it….I forgot to pull it.8) I’ll check it in a few days after the critters have had a chance to clean it a little.
She was long nosed, but not quite as long as she looked in the photo…..but she had the most gorgeous dark coat and dark face. I don’t think she was terribly old, but I could be wrong….guessing 2.5 Will let you know when I check the jaw. What I do know is the backstraps were delicious last night with rice and field peas from the garden.:D
Thanks everybody. Cheers!

Ben, I might hold you to that someday! And who knows, you might make it over with Dave P sometime – he’s dying to take in the Irish pubs here 😀

Not to get off topic, but Wexbow, how is bowhunting out your way? Other than TBM, I have heard very little about archery overseas (with the exception of Africa of course), especially traditional archery. If I’m not mistaken, Germany does not allow archery hunting at all. Anyway, do you make it out of the country to hunt? If so, how does it compare?
Be well,
Alex

Alex, no bowhunting here I’m afraid but I’m a keen archer and aspiring bowhunter who’s putting the scratch together to head abroad for a bowhunt in the not too distant future, I hope. See link in my signature for details on trying to change this situation next door in Britain. But in recompense I do a lot of fishing and some shotgunning so not all bad!

My wife’s grandfather immigrated from Ireland, to Canada, and then her dad, came to the USA where she was born. We sent our twin sons there for their college graduation present in 2006, and they did a thorough touring of the pubs, from what I understand:shock::D.
Boys will be boys I suppose! Glad I never did anything like that.8)
My wife and I are going to make it there (that’s the plan anyhow) for our 40th anniversary, been 38 years so far, so only 2 to go. We both are really looking forward to that trip.
The boys flew into Dublin and stayed in country for 5 days, then backpack toured Europe for a couple weeks on their own dime.

Wexbow: It’s a shame. What is the biggest obstacle? You figure the home-place of Robin Hood, the English Longbow, etc, would be a bit friendlier to archers. I guess the good news is that if you plan a DIY trip, you don’t have to shell out any more than many of us out-of-towners. Airfare pretty much is equal, depending on airport. Traveling with a bow in your checked luggage isn’t different than traveling with a scuba knife. And licenses cost the same weather you are out-of-state or out-of-country. The only piece of advice I have (can’t believe I am actually giving advice) is if travelling to the states, check on archery safety course requirements. Some states require an approved safety course and will not sell you a license without the card; others only require a general hunter safety course. I’d hate to see a hard-earned trip go to heck for something so simple to overlook. I’m guessing that hooking up with some folks and taking a trip out might save some money as well. Anyway, good luck. Hope you make it out and I hope the rules there change. With populations ever increasing, rifles are not always practical to hunt, and archery is one of the few methods remaining to manage game. Be well.
Alex
