So I have been having an issue lately when shooting my bow, and when I release it hits the side of my nose. Not the nicest feeling in the world and when its starts to bleed its never a fun time shooting. I have never had this happen to be before and wonder if anyone else has the same issue and what the best soluition to fix it….my guess turn my head more so I am looking at the target more.

I think 3 Rivers offers a Cordovan nose flap? Wink

          Sorry, couldn’t resist.

I saw a guy, in the “Masters of the Barebow” series, that put a band-aid on his nose before shooting to prevent the same problem. If you’re shooting well and the only downside is the string hitting your nose, then maybe this will help you, too. ???

Kidding aside, I can’t image that hitting your nose with the string would be a good thing for a clean release (or for your nose). Putting a band-aid on seems like a weird and counter-productive step to me. Better to move your face slightly to face the target with no interference, imo.

I figure its going to be like a kid putting the fork in the light socket…..BBBZZZZZ!!! (Alright won’t do that again cause it hurts) I just don’t know that I am doing wrong, hugging the string to tight I guess. You should see my nose those its all scabbed up looking really nice. Only crappy thing is I can’t shoot for a couple of days now 🙁

I have done this a few times myself… It happends to me if I turn my head to much to the right. It hasn’t happend in a while but I am sure tomorrow when I shoot it will…lol

Your turning your head when making your final pull before release. Rod Jenkins used to do this when we shot together. His nose would bleed like he had cut it off. Finally figured out that he was over pulling and wasn’t able to pull any futher without turning his head. Once he went back to his normal draw it stopped.

TK — Is there any chance you are shooting “cross eyed”? That is, for instance, left-eyed but shooting right handed and hugging your brace too tight to try and compensate? If not, I’d start by trying minor changes in your anchor point. I hear Jimmy Durante had this same problem. Wink

Actually, I think Rod Jenkins was the guy in the video. So Mr. Breeding probably has the answer. Wish I had better advice to give than literally putting a band-aid on it, but I’ve only been at this for a very short amount of time. Good luck to you, and if ya get it figured out, let us know, so at least I can learn something. 🙂

It’s happened to me a few times too. I tracked it down to a burr on my nocking point.

I use a brass nockset on top, and a wrapped nock set on the bottom. Either one can cut you. Look for a burr on the brass, and/or swivel the brass around a little bit so the seam is in a different place. Look at the knot on a tied nock set. it is usually the culprit.

That said, I quit using tied nock sets cause they always ended up bothering me. Now I just use 2 nice smooth brass nock sets…

The band-aid idea really helps in the short term.

If you are right handed turn your head to the left to get it over the arrow by how much you will learn by experience. Jawge

This may sound silly, but could this be caused by a slight drift in eye dominance? That is if you shoot three under and you are used to looking down the arrow, and your eye dominance has drifted a little your brain may try to compensate by putting your other eye (and nose) closer to the arrow. I dont even know if this is possible, Im just throwing it out there out of curiosity.

AHA! I finally figured it out today what was going on, I took the advice which you gave me and I made sure that when I was shooting my face was looking more towards the target and BAM still waked me in the nose. Next shot same thing, next shot same thing and now my nose was bleeding. It only took a few more arrows and my amazing tracking skills to realize that my nock had blood on it. At a closer look I found out that the open end of my nock actually had a sharpe edge on it and that is was catching my nose. Needless to same I am going to fix that problem tonight and hopefully get it fix.
