As some of you know I am new to Traditional Archery. I introduced myself over on the campfire forum but for some that may not have read it my name is Drew and I am sick of all the junk that is the modern hunting industry. I’m ready for traditional. With that being said I need some help. I am ready to make my first bow purchase as I have a little money set aside. Here’s my conundrum. My compound (which I’ll need to keep through this season, before giving it away)is set to 60 pounds but I know that traditional is much different. Should I buy a lower weight recurve say, 30-35 pounds and get my form right before buying my hunting bow or should I go on and get a hunting bow say around 45-50 pounds. My plan is to shoot at least twice per week for a year before taking it after deer. Is this a reasonable goal. Also, any other advice yall can offer will be much appreciated. Oh, I’m a huge reader. What books can yall recommend to teach me as I go along?
Thanks so much for all the help! Yall are the best!

        Drew

I’m a average man, so I try to use the following principle:
          KISS: Keep it Simple Stupid!

#45-55lb bow Long or Recurve, your choice.

Have it set up by a traditional shooter/shop.

Shoot the correct arrows for your draw and bow weight.

I shoot 12 arrows each day. No more, no less.

Pick a spot on a spot when shooting. This is my constant challenge!!!

          Simple, simple, simple. Have fun.

I agree with the advice so far, after shooting 60lb compound I belive you should be able to handle a 45lb stringbow as long as you keep your shooting sessions short to begin with.
I prefer to shoot fewer arrows everyday than only shooting a couple of times a week.
This is because I notice a drop in form if I don’t shoot everyday,,,and then it takes me quite a few arrows to get back into my groove again.
You may be different of course, but that’s what works for me.
Shooting for 12 months before hitting the woods is a very good idea “more people should do this”.
              Good luck in your travels.
              John.
