        OK Guys,

I need some advice from some of you more experienced shooters.

I’m trying to paper tune an older bear kodiak recurve – Regardless of nock point location on the string, I’m showing nock high every time on the tears. I’ve tried the nock from 1/8 in >90 degrees to 7/8 >90 degrees. Tears are smaller the higher the nock point.

Interestingly there is no left/right variation in the tears.

The bow is 60″ long, 60# at 28″ and I draw about 25.5″; the arrows are douglas fir, cut to 27″ and are spined at ~65#

I’m using a thin leather (1/16 inch) strike plate and the shelf material is also hard leather (3/16 thick). Standing about 10 ft away from paper.

        Thoughts?

        Thanks in advance.

          Ouch!!!!

Hate to tell you this, but your arrows are waaaaaaaay too stiff.

You say the bow is 60#@28″. You only draw 25.5″. Using the average 3# increase or loss per inch of draw, it would have you only pulling 53# at best. Even by leaving your shafts long you are still over spined.

Also your bow is most likely only cut to center at best.

You didn’t say what point weight.

I doubt you will ever get these shafts to shoot without some serious weight up front.

            Thanks so much Troy

You are correct — the bow is cut to center.

I’ve tried a variety of point weights — from 125 to 190 gr. Seems like the 190 gr shoot a little better.

I just wasn’t sure if it was a clearance issue or not.

Well, I guess I’ll just have to buy a new bow (!!) or give these arrows away (ha!)

You may also want to try a second nock locator under your arrow. Leave about 1/16″ gap. Oftentimes an inability to tune out nock high when shooting off the shelf is due to your nocks sliding down the serving during the shot. This can cause the back of the arrow to bounce off the shelf, making tuning impossible.

Thanks – I’ll try the 2nd nock locator this evening.

What J said. But leave a little space under the arrow and the lower nock (1/16 in). Otherwise at full draw you may crush the arrow nock.

Thanks for the advice — made the changes and got a near bullet hole on the paper tune.

                    1) Changed pt weight from 125 to 190 gr

                    2) Added 2nd nock locator with 1/16 space (I guess I didn’t realize how much I was pinching the nock)

                    3) put a thicker leather rest w/a toothpick underneath

                    Thanks again

                    Scott
